Years ago, when Camila Davis first shared her ideas, she’d actually called it a “miracle.”
Jordan Smith didn’t remember that. Or, to be honest, he’d never cared enough to remember in the first place.
Now, all of a sudden, that word—miracle—came crashing back like a slap in the face.
Jordan stood in his office, jaw clenched, the flush creeping up his neck. He was seething.
Back then, the Smith Group’s medical device division had been stuck at a few billion dollars in valuation after years of hard work. Solid, but hardly headline news.
Then N.Z. Teck burst onto the scene and rocketed ahead.
That system Camila created—he knew it could have been implemented at Smith Group. But she hadn’t done it.
Had she planned this all along? Pretending to underperform as head of R&D, just waiting for her exit before showing the world what she could do?
Jordan’s mood soured by the second. The tension in the room could have curdled milk.
He grabbed his phone and called Sandra Taylor. “You saw the new product, right? What’s your take?” he demanded.
Sandra was on her way back to the Smith Group headquarters. She was still reeling from what she’d just seen at the N.Z. Teck demo.
And now, of course, Jordan was calling. She guessed he’d seen the news too. No way she could afford to give the wrong answer right now.
She switched into damage control mode. “I only just found out—Camila’s behind this whole system,” she said quickly, voice tight with outrage. “Jordan, she’s gone too far! She used Smith Group’s resources to develop such an amazing platform and then kept it hidden from us. As your wife, I can’t believe how calculating she’s been—leaving Smith Group just to launch a rival product and undermine us!”
Jordan cut her off, voice cold and clipped. “Enough. I’m not looking for excuses. What I need from you is a plan to develop a system just as good—no, better. The Smith Group’s business is already taking a hit. If we don’t turn this around, we’re finished.”
