Dennis Williams was caught completely off guard by the little girl’s sudden move.

Aaron just stared, dumbfounded.

Honestly, Lillian was probably the first person in the world who’d ever dared to hug Mr. Williams like that.

He usually kept everyone at arm’s length. Who knew if he’d be okay with this?

Camila Davis was just as shocked.

She’d never seen Lillian act so affectionate with anyone before. Sure, she knew Lillian trusted Mr. Williams, but this was a whole new level.

Camila felt a little awkward, and she couldn’t help but worry that Mr. Williams might mind.

But honestly? She and Aaron were overthinking it.

Dennis Williams snapped out of his daze pretty quickly and grinned. “Well, Uncle likes Lillian too.”

Lillian beamed, her smile as sweet as apple pie.

After a few more moments of goofing around with her, Dennis finally turned to Camila and said, “Lillian’s progress shows that phase one of her therapy has been a total success. We can take a break for now.”

“Huh?” Camila blinked, her heart tripping over itself. “You mean… you won’t be working with her anymore?”

Dennis nodded. “She’s doing great. She’s started reaching out, talking to people, and she’s not shutting the world out anymore. She’s curious. So, she doesn’t need the same constant support she did before.”

Camila listened, and a strange, hard-to-pin-down sadness crept into her chest.

She should’ve been happy, right?

No more therapy meant Lillian was almost fully healed.

So why didn’t it feel as good as she’d imagined?

Camila frowned at herself, annoyed that she couldn’t make sense of her own feelings. She dropped her gaze, ready to thank him.

But before she could say a word, Dennis added, “Christmas is coming up—let’s see how she’s doing after the holidays, and then we can start phase two. I’ll probably have a lighter schedule then, so I can focus more on being her art teacher. We can shift gears a little.”

Camila froze, her eyes going wide with hope.
