Dennis Williams didn’t respond at first. He just added, “They also brought up the idea of the Williams and Lee families joining through marriage.”
Larry Adams blinked in surprise.
He knew about this so-called engagement—a centuries-old promise between the Williams and Lee families, arranged by their elders ages ago.
Honestly, Larry always thought the whole thing was a bit ridiculous.
Who even does arranged marriages nowadays?
But the Williams family was no ordinary family. Their word was gold, and clearly, they took this promise seriously.
Still, from what Larry knew about Dennis, the guy wasn’t exactly the type to let his life—or marriage—be dictated by anyone else.
Larry’s eyes sparkled with curiosity. He couldn’t help but probe, “Lillian’s doing really well these days. Around people she knows, you’d never guess what she’s been through. That’s all thanks to your help, of course… By the way, you’ve been hanging around Harrisburg a lot longer than usual lately. Mind if I ask something a little… personal?”
Dennis shot him a frosty look. “You’ve already decided to ask, so why bother with the preamble? Spit it out.”
Larry grinned and blurted, “Do you have… feelings for Ms. Davis?”
Dennis frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I just mean… you’ve never really shown this much interest in anyone outside your family, but with Lillian and Ms. Davis… it just feels different,” Larry said, trying to sound diplomatic.
But honestly, Dennis’s attitude toward Ms. Davis was downright unusual. Larry and Dennis had known each other since they were kids back in Cabinda, and Larry had never seen Dennis act so… gentle with any woman before.
Normally, Dennis was distant, reserved, and borderline unapproachable. The kind of guy people admired from afar but never dared to get close to.
