Because Mr. Harris had called her out of the blue, Camila Davis barely had time to delegate her workload to her team before she had to rush home and throw some things into a suitcase.
She was still struggling with a stuck zipper when Mr. Harris’ driver pulled up outside.
Camila scrambled downstairs to meet him and was whisked straight off to the airport.
It was only during the drive that she finally got a chance to let Walter Wilson know what was happening.
After all, dropping everything at The Smith Group to handle someone else’s emergency wasn’t something she took lightly. She owed him a heads-up.
Her voice was apologetic as she explained, “It’s a matter of life and death, Walter. And since we just wrapped up that deal with Cabinda, it didn’t feel right to ignore this.”
Walter chuckled as he listened. “You don’t have to justify yourself to me. That Cabinda deal went through so fast, I figure it probably had something to do with your connections on the military side.”
Sure, Mr. Reed had helped push things along. But it was Camila’s reputation as a first-rate doctor and her research skills that really sealed the deal. Walter had picked up as much from some offhand remarks by the directors back in Cabinda.
He wasn’t about to get in her way.
If anything, he figured Camila needed to build her own network. That was the only way she’d get stronger—by making her own mark.
He’d always believed that someone as extraordinary as Camila deserved to shine in her own field, not be dragged down by a miserable marriage.
Thinking that, Walter added, “Don’t worry about The Smith Group. I’ll keep an eye on things here and let you know right away if anything comes up.”
Camila was relieved he wasn’t upset. “Thank you, Walter.”
They didn’t chat for long. Soon, she hung up.
The car sped down the highway, and about forty minutes later, they reached the airport.
As soon as she got out, someone was there to meet her and hustle her through a VIP express lane to a waiting private jet.
The plane took off just as night was settling in. By the time they landed, it was already close to 10 p.m.
