Steven Edwards, standing nearby, noticed her change in demeanor and felt a knot of worry tighten in his chest. “Ms. Davis, did you find something?”

It wasn’t until then that Camila took a deep breath. “I did find something,” she said, “but before I say more, I need to ask the captain a few questions.”

Steven’s expression sharpened. “Go ahead.”

Camila’s tone was brisk. “Where exactly did you all go on your mission? Was it some kind of wild, uncharted forest?”

“Yes,” Steven replied, not hesitating for a second.

Camila pressed on. “You mentioned the area was dangerous. Did you have to wade through water at any point?”

“We did!” Steven looked a little surprised but didn’t hold back. “The target was across a black river. We had to cross it on foot to avoid drawing attention.”

As he spoke, something seemed to dawn on him. “Wait… you’re saying their symptoms are connected to the water?”

Now that Camila had confirmation, she was almost certain. “That’s right. In environments like that, there’s a nasty bug that lives in the water. You can’t spot it with the naked eye. If you don’t get in the water, you’re safe. But once you do, and if you get bitten, things can turn deadly fast if it’s not treated.”

“What?!”

Steven’s tough exterior cracked for a split second, and the other team members, along with the nurses and doctors, all looked stunned.
