She didn’t waste a second—no sooner had she said “let’s start” than her phone was out and her notes app was open.
Dennis Williams didn’t beat around the bush either. After a quick moment to collect his thoughts, he dove right in, rattling off a series of injury cases he’d seen over the years—nothing too small or weird to mention.
Camila Davis listened intently, jotting down every detail, her face shifting from eager curiosity to something much more serious as Dennis kept talking.
Even though all he was really describing were the symptoms and injuries his team had faced, it was obvious—just from the way he told it—how dangerous things had been out there.
The visible wounds? They were the easy part.
The real trouble started when they headed into the wilderness—places thick with ancient trees and all kinds of hidden threats. There were infections from the environment, the weather, poisonous plants, animals, insects… Viruses nobody could even name.
The longer she listened, the more Camila’s heart pounded.
Especially when Dennis talked about how some of the team hadn’t made it back, and what they’d gone through. It was hard not to feel shaken.
Maybe Dennis noticed the look in her eyes, because he paused and asked, “You okay? Am I freaking you out?”
Camila shook her head. “No—it’s not that. I’m just realizing we really didn’t get enough info from the agency before. What the SWAT team’s gone through… it’s way worse than I imagined. The meds we’ve been working on—they’re probably nowhere near enough. I’m glad I asked you today—makes it a lot clearer for me.
Looks like we’ll need to scrap the old plan and start from scratch.”
Her brows were drawn tightly together as she spoke.
They’d only been talking for about half an hour, but Camila had already filled page after page on her phone. It hit her just how underprepared she really was.
