Camila Davis shook her head. “Not yet, Susan should be just about done though.”
Right on cue, Susan emerged from the kitchen balancing a tray. “Ms. Davis, breakfast is ready! Come and eat while it’s hot.”
Dennis Williams glanced at her and said, “Let’s get some breakfast first. I’ve checked on Lillian—she’ll be alright.”
He paused, speaking with that calm assurance of his. “When people are asleep, our defenses are down. Sometimes old memories sneak into our dreams and mess with our heads. But Lillian’s a strong kid. She won’t be shaken easily. Once she wakes up, I’ll help her through this, I promise.”
Camila still looked worried.
Dennis noticed and grinned gently. “You don’t trust me?”
She met his eyes. Just standing there, he had this grounded, solid presence—like you could weather any storm by his side. He’d never let her down before.
Without hesitation, Camila said, “I trust you.”
Dennis’ tone lightened. “Great, then let’s eat. You should rest after breakfast. Leave the rest to me.”
Camila didn’t argue. Instead, she asked, “Mr. Williams, you got here so early, I bet you haven’t eaten either. Would you like to join us?”
“Sure,” Dennis replied with a nod.
Susan quickly fetched another plate and silverware, and they all sat down together. The table was set with scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, pancakes, and steaming mugs of coffee—classic comfort food.
As they ate, Camila found herself relaxing, the heavy cloud over her heart beginning to lift. With Dennis around, everything always seemed a little easier.
After breakfast, Lillian finally woke up.
Camila hurried to her daughter’s room. The little girl, still recovering from her fever, was unusually clingy and quiet. She barely spoke, and instead of her usual exuberant hugs for Dennis, she only wanted her mom.
