When they arrived at the house, it was Patrick who answered the door.
The moment he saw Sandra Taylor and Jordan Smith standing on the porch, he recognized them instantly. His usually friendly, charitable face turned cold.
“Who are you looking for?”
Sandra, not picking up on the chilly vibe at all, stepped forward with a bright smile. “Hi, I’m Sandra Taylor, and this is Jordan Smith—he’s the CEO of the Smith Group, and also my partner. We’re here today hoping for some help.
We’ve heard all about the legendary ‘Miracle Doctor’ from Johns Hopkins—word is, his skills are second to none. My partner has been suffering for years with a chronic illness, and nothing has worked so far.
We’re here with the utmost sincerity, hoping the Miracle Doctor would be willing to take a look.”
Patrick nearly rolled his eyes.
If he remembered correctly, this same Smith guy had his leg fixed by Miss Davis, and she nursed him back to health for years. But instead of being grateful, he turned his back on her. And now, they had the nerve to show up here, begging for help?
Patrick replied, voice flat as week-old soda, “Sorry, Mr. Morris isn’t taking patients. You’ll have to leave.”
He started to close the door.
“Wait, please—!” Sandra quickly blocked the door with her hand.
This was her shot at securing her place as Mrs. Smith—no way she was going to give up that easily.
She pleaded, “Please, we really are sincere! Money is no object. The Miracle Doctor is famous for his compassion—surely he wouldn’t just stand by and let such a brilliant man suffer, would he?”
Patrick’s tone stayed frosty. “Mr. Morris is a good man, but he has his own rules. He decides who he sees, and that’s non-negotiable.”
Nathan Gates, who’d come along as well, tried to smooth things over. “Of course, but we haven’t even met Mr. Morris yet. How can we know his answer if we haven’t spoken to him directly?”
Jordan chimed in, calm but insistent. “Sir, would you let us speak to Mr. Morris? Just for a moment?”
Patrick was losing patience. His words came out clipped and cold. “Sorry, Mr. Morris isn’t in the mood for visitors these days. Please leave.”
He gave the door a good shove and shut it in their faces.
Inside, Mr. Morris himself appeared in the hallway, frowning. “Who was making all that racket outside?”
Patrick snorted. “It was Smith and that woman who bullied Miss Davis. They wanted you to treat them, but I sent them packing.”
Mr. Morris’s face darkened. “He’s got the nerve to come here? And brings her with him?”
