Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 373

At the conference, everyone was laser-focused on medicine, healthcare innovations, and the future of the industry.

Four hours crawled by. The sky outside was already tinged with dusky gold when Camila Davis finally understood why her mentor hadn’t shown up.

Honestly, she couldn’t blame him. Even she, young as she was, felt like her back was about to give out from sitting so long.

When the meeting finally wrapped up, the group made their way to The Wilson Hotel for the evening gala.

On the way, Camila’s phone buzzed with a message from Walter Wilson. “Are you on your way?”

She texted back, “Yep, headed over now.”

“Good. Just a heads-up: tonight you’ll see way more people than at the conference. Probably double.”

Camila frowned, puzzled. “How come?”

Walter replied, “The conference was all about the professionals. But tonight, you’ll see a lot of the old-timers from The Smith Group, the big pharma company. Remember, this isn’t just a medical conference—it’s a ‘Medical Business Association.’ When there’s business, there’s always more players.”

“Oh, got it.”

It made sense. Big pharma was a huge part of the industry, after all. And a lot of the folks at the conference were researchers—the backbone of any company in the field.

Walter, knowing Camila wasn’t always comfortable with these schmoozy events, tried to reassure her. “Don’t sweat it. I’ll be there too. If you need backup, just signal me and I’ll help you navigate.”

Camila grinned at his message. “Thanks, but I’m getting the hang of these things. After a few of these dinners, you sort of learn to go with the flow. Besides… there’s no way I can stay under the radar tonight, even if I wanted to. Not with my mentor around—unless he decides to ignore me entirely…”

Thinking of that, Camila’s nerves fluttered. She’d been in town for days, and he still hadn’t agreed to meet her.

Walter shot back, “You worry too much! Mr. Morris isn’t the type to hold grudges. He wouldn’t give you the cold shoulder.”

“Let’s hope not…”

After a bit more chatting, Camila put her phone away and focused on the city lights streaming past the car window.

Ten minutes later, she arrived at the hotel ballroom, already humming with conversation. The tables were set, name cards in place. Camila quickly found her seat—near the front, but not at the main table. Still, it was a compliment; she was the youngest person anywhere near the VIPs.

The main table was reserved for the industry’s living legends—people with national honors, heads of the medical board, and…

Her mentor.
