Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 39

When she arrived, Walter Wilson hadn’t shown up yet, so Camila ordered a cup of black coffee and settled in to wait.

Just a few minutes past two, a tall figure appeared and slid into the seat across from her.

He was wearing a custom-tailored black suit that fit his lean, athletic frame perfectly. Something about the way he sat down—confident, unapologetic—made it feel like he owned the room. There was a restless, almost aristocratic air to him.

Walter’s strikingly handsome face was set in a stony expression, his brows pulled together in a dark scowl. There was a barely-contained impatience simmering beneath his cool exterior.

He glanced at his expensive watch, lifted his wrist with a dramatic sigh, and declared, “You’ve got ten minutes. Make it count.”

Camila only smiled at his theatrics and nudged the coffee cup toward him. “Relax, I ordered your favorite—an Americano.”

Walter looked down at the cup with a faint, biting smirk. “I’m surprised you remembered. Someone as busy as you, paying attention to something so trivial?”

Camila just shrugged. “I haven’t got amnesia yet. It’s not that hard.”

Walter gave a dismissive huff and took a sip.

He swallowed, then got straight to the point. “So? Why did you want to meet?”

Camila hesitated for a few seconds. After all, she’d been the one to leave so decisively. Now, coming back, she had no idea how Walter would take it.

But she steeled herself. “I… want to come back to medical research.”

Walter froze, staring at her as if trying to figure out if he’d heard right.

After a moment, his voice turned sharp and mocking. “You left with so much conviction. Why come back now? What happened to The Smith Group? Or did you and Jordan Smith get into another fight, so you’re here just to spite him?”

His words hit her like a slap, and her face paled.

She wanted to explain, to say it wasn’t like that, but Walter didn’t give her the chance. He cut her off, voice cold and brimming with anger: “Camila, I’m not in the mood for your games. You threw away your career for that guy without a second thought. Now you think you can just waltz back in? What do you take this profession for—a joke? If I let you back in, and then you two make up, what am I supposed to do? I’m not here to be a pawn in your marital drama. Don’t waste my time.”

The rejection was blunt and unmistakable.

Camila took a deep breath. “Jordan and I… are getting divorced. I’ve already filed the papers. This isn’t a joke, Walter.”
