Swapping a Broken Heart for a New Start novel Chapter 51

Just then, Walter Wilson shot her a message with an update on the new research lab.

“The old lab’s equipment is practically ancient by now. Since you’re coming back, I’m making sure you have the best—top-of-the-line everything! How’s that? Impressed? I’m spoiling you, aren’t I?”

He even attached a photo to prove it.

Camila Davis glanced at it and felt a swell of gratitude.

This guy was always talking about “budgets are tight” and “labs cost a fortune,” but honestly? His actions told a whole different story.

Every piece of medical equipment was state-of-the-art. The office itself? Understated but luxurious, with a spacious break room—even a Nespresso machine and a bowl of fresh croissants, just how she liked it.

Camila couldn’t help but smile. She texted back right away: “Thank you, Mr. Wilson! You’re the best boss. I promise I’ll work my butt off and get you some miracle drugs in return for your faith in me.”

Walter sent her a voice note, sounding half exasperated, half amused: “Camila Davis, can you just be serious for once?”

Camila bit her lip, grinning. The little cloud that had been hanging over her all day started to lift.

The whole therapist thing… well, she’d just have to take it slow. No point stressing. If the right person was out there, she’d meet them when the time was right.

Besides, Lillian was doing a lot better these days.

Her little girl had turned into a social butterfly—literally. Recently, she’d been desperate to make friends with anything that moved, from the next-door neighbor’s golden retriever to the butterflies flitting around their backyard.

Right now, Lillian was crouched out on the lawn, chattering away nonstop. Camila couldn’t tell if she was whispering to the daisies or the butterflies, but her lips kept moving.

Curious, Camila wandered over.

Lillian’s voice was soft as a summer breeze—impossible to make out.

Camila knelt down. “Sweetheart, what are you whispering to the butterflies? Can Mommy know the secret?”

Lillian blinked her big, clear blue eyes and piped up in that sweet little kid voice, “Nope! It’s a secret between me and the butterflies.”

“Oh, is that so?” Camila put on her best disappointed face. “Well, okay, if it’s just for you and the butterflies, I guess I won’t ask anymore.”

Lillian giggled, lips pressed into a tiny smile, and turned back to her winged friends, whispering away.

Watching her daughter blossom like this made Camila’s heart swell. Lillian was becoming her own little person—brave and bright and sweet, even if only Camila seemed to see it.

But as she watched, her thoughts drifted, inevitably, to Jordan Smith…

Ever since that blow-up in the parking lot, he’d basically vanished. No texts, no calls, no sign of him at home.

She hadn’t even had a chance to ask about the divorce papers.
