Clara waved at the test subject in the distance.
He made his way over in no time. The second Charles saw who it was, he nearly jumped out of his skin, fists already clenched, ready for a fight.
“Relax, bro. He’s my new recruit,” Clara said casually.
Charles pressed his lips together, eyeing the guy. “Seriously? How did you pull that off? This guy’s worth ten billion. That idiot Milo came all the way here just for him, and you—you just waltzed in and tamed the deadliest weapon around like it was nothing.”
Before Clara could answer, the ground shook and a tree nearby crashed to the ground, roots and all. Clara ducked out of the way just in time.
Milo and Buddy were already sprinting ahead, frantically searching for somewhere safe.
But the mudslide was massive—there was nowhere to hide.
The three of them raced through the chaos, looking like a mess. They kept running, not stopping until they’d put almost five kilometers between themselves and the disaster. Finally, the mudslide hadn’t reached this far, and they could catch their breath. Milo and Buddy stood tall, barking at the shadows—something was out there.
Suddenly, Milo lunged, snapping down on the arm of someone hiding in the underbrush.
The test subject opened his eyes slowly and looked straight at Clara.
She was out of breath, still not fully recovered from the past few rough days. There was no way she could take on all these attackers—had to be Jules’s people. Of course Jules wouldn’t let the test subject go so easily.
“Go take care of them. Tonight, I’ll make you something good to eat,” Clara said, trying to keep it light.
The test subject gave the tiniest nod, then shot forward, knife flashing.
He was on a whole different level. Even with guns aimed at him, he didn’t get so much as a scratch.

When Clara saw the attack, her heart almost stopped. Seeing Charles was okay, she finally let out a breath.
“Don’t mess with him, bro,” Clara warned quietly.
Charles slumped down next to her, both of them exhausted.
Now that things had quieted down, Milo and Buddy flopped over on the ground, panting.
