He sets the picnic basket down. “Do you, Tiana? Do you like me?” he asks.

“What kind of a question is that?” I ask. “Of course I like you. Do you really think I’d have let you be my first if I didn’t?”

“Do you like me, or did you feel comfortable enough with me to let me be your first?” he

asks.

I frown. “I’m not sure what you’re asking, Shane.”

“We rushed into things, T. We went too far, too fast. Maybe I’m not like other men, but I don‘ t want to be some guy that’s convenient that you use to get through the Academy. If we’re going to be together, then I want it to be because we’re friends, we know each other and we care about each other. We hardly know anything about each other, T. Before we become intimate again, I think we need to take a step back and decide if we even really like each other.”

“I know I like you, Shane.”

He smiles at me. “What’s my favorite food, T?” he asks.

I open my mouth to answer, then stop. I have no idea.

“Right. I have no idea what your favorite color is. Shouldn’t someone who puts their body into yours know these things? Shouldn’t you know something so simple about me, if you’re letting me put my body into yours?”

He shrugs. “Maybe I’m crazy but I want more than to just fuck. I’m not saying it wasn’t great… for me at least. But I think, if we’re going to have incredible sex, if we’re going to have a chance to make it on the leaderboard, and more important, if we’re going to have a chance to be together exclusively for a year and a half, we need to know more about each other than you’re impulsive and like to have your way, and my parents died and I’m grieving,”

he says.
