The front door opened with a soft creak as Evelyn stepped into the living room, still shaken, her eyes red and puffy. Her makeup was smudged from the tears she had been crying all the way home.
Her mother, Mrs. Carter, looked up from the couch, frowning.
“Evelyn? What happened to you?”
Evelyn dropped her purse to the floor and walked slowly toward them like a wounded child. “Mom… Dad… you won’t believe what Emily did to me today.”
Mr. Carter turned off the TV and looked at her seriously. “What happened?”
“She… she pushed me,” Evelyn said, sniffling as she sat down, “in front of everyone at the mall. I tried to talk to her nicely… I even called her sis. But she screamed at me and pushed me to the ground!”
Mrs. Carter gasped. “She did what?!”
“She caused a big scene, Mom. She slapped Julie hard in public. Everyone was staring at us like we were criminals. And when I tried to defend her… she acted like I was her enemy.”
“Unbelievable,” Mr. Carter muttered.
“That girl has lost her mind,” Evelyn added, wiping tears from her cheek. “It’s like she’s turned into someone else. She looked… dangerous.”
Mrs. Carter stood up, her hands on her waist. “I told you,” she said sharply to her husband. “I warned you about that girl! She’s just like her mother—bitter, ungrateful, and wicked!”
“Mom…”
“No, let me talk!” Mrs. Carter barked. “After everything we’ve done for her… this is how she repays us? Acting like a wild animal in public? Shaming her own family?”
“She didn’t even feel sorry,” Evelyn added. “She said we should all stay away from her. That she’s no longer part of this family.”
Mrs. Carter scoffed. “Good! Let her go! Honestly, what was so difficult about giving us a little help with the company shares? Just selfish! Just like that useless mother of hers.”
Mr. Carter’s face grew darker. He clenched his jaw, silent, but the anger in his eyes was clear.
“You see now?” Mrs. Carter said, pressing harder. “This is the daughter you were protecting. The one you said we should be patient with. Look at how she’s humiliating us now.”
“She disgraced us,” Evelyn added quietly, “and she made people think I’m fake… like I don’t love my own sister.”
Mrs. Carter rolled her eyes. “She’s not your sister, and never was. That girl is a curse. And if you ask me, the earlier we forget she exists, the better.”
Mr. Carter stood slowly, his expression hard. “Enough,” he said coldly. “If she wants to be an outsider, let her stay that way.”
Evelyn leaned back into her mother’s arms, sobbing quietly, while Mrs. Carter gently stroked her hair.
“Don’t worry, sweetie,” she said, her voice dripping with poison. “Sooner or later, the world will show Emily just how powerless she really is.”

Julie stormed into the living room, tears already running down her face. She threw her bag to the floor and sat on the couch like her whole world had fallen apart.
Charles, who had just come out of the shower, rushed over when he saw her crying.
“What happened?” he asked sharply, grabbing a towel to wipe his wet hands.
Julie looked up at him, her eyes swollen and red.
“It’s Emily… she humiliated me today… in public!”
