Janetta was completely oblivious to the awkwardness simmering between Julian and Felicity.
She grumbled, "Don't judge Winona just because she doesn't have much to her name and acts a bit shameless all day—she actually has three talents. She can do laundry, she can cook, and she gives me the best massages. Her technique is just right, better than any professional masseuse I've ever hired."
When neither Julian nor Felicity responded, Janetta twisted around with some effort to look at them, a hint of frustration in her eyes.
She sighed, "Julian, Felly, I know Winona's annoying. None of us want her hanging around the Nicholson family, but Tiana needs her. Both you and Tiana love her cooking, and Felly, you've enjoyed her meals more than once. Why not just pay her a bit more and let her be the housekeeper?"
Seeing his mother's pained, tilted posture, Julian felt helpless, unsure how to tell her what happened at the birthday dinner last night.
So he hedged, "Mom, I'll think about it. For now, let me find a professional masseuse to help with your stiff neck."
"I suppose that's all we can do," Janetta sighed.
It wasn't until she fell ill herself that she realized how much she depended on Winona. Taking care of Tiana, on top of her own neck pain these past few days, made it clear—Winona had somehow become indispensable.
Half an hour later, Julian managed to hire a well-known masseuse from Greenwood City, at the hefty rate of three hundred dollars an hour.
But when the masseuse heard Janetta wanted a nonstop five- or six-hour massage until her neck pain was gone, she balked.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Nicholson, but I can't do that. Massaging someone for six hours straight? My hands and wrists would give out."
"That's impossible! My daughter-in-law's massaged me for six or seven hours at a time, and her wrists never gave out!"
The masseuse shot back, "Your daughter-in-law must be cursed, having a mother-in-law like you!" With that, she grabbed her bag and hurried out.
Janetta was speechless.
