The sight of the three holding hands—Julian, Felicity, and little Tiana—looked every bit the picture of a happy family.
Winona made no visible response. It simply didn't touch her.
She quietly resumed searching for her notebook.
Julian's expression as he glanced at Winona was even colder than Winona's as she looked at the three of them.
He knew she would come back.
Yates had already cut off her living allowance; if she didn't return, she wouldn't survive long.
Winona was utterly invisible to Julian. He didn't dare look at her directly, turning instead to Felicity and Tiana. "What do you two want for lunch?" he asked.
Tiana said nothing. She pursed her lips and glared at Winona, sulking in silence.
Felicity's cool gaze flicked briefly to Winona before turning away. Then she smiled gently and replied, "We still have to stop by the hospital to see Victor later, so let's just have something simple at home. Oh! That... Clam Chowder! The last time I visited your office, you said the housekeeper made it especially for you—something to whet your appetite?"
Clam Chowder? That was Winona's specialty.
Back when she was eighteen and had nothing to her name, she'd made her living selling Clam Chowder from a street cart. It was how she'd survived.
After marrying Julian, she would often make it for him and his family.
Julian loved that dish. For someone so self-controlled, he always ended up overindulging whenever she made it.
Yet only today did Winona realize: Julian had told Felicity the dish was made by the housekeeper—and served it to her as well.
Within the Nicholson household, Winona held even less standing than the hired staff.
Julian shot a quick glance Winona's way, then looked back at Felicity.
"Let's have something else today," he said offhandedly.
"Anything's fine," Felicity replied with a nod.
