James tilted his head slightly, locking eyes with Mirabella. When their gazes met, the meaning behind her words clicked in his mind. "I get it. I'll find someone else to take a look."
The meteorite was stirring up quite a few issues, and Mr. Maverick's personal visit indicated it wasn't just about researching some underground chamber. The old saying, "a treasure invites trouble," wasn't lost on him.
Still, handing him something so important with such ease—this level of trust made James chuckle softly.
"Alright," Mirabella nodded, letting the matter go. She turned her head to gaze out the window, catching sight of an SUV driving alongside them. Something clicked in her mind, prompting her to ask, "By the way, has anyone left the archaeological team since I left?"
James gathered his thoughts. "Mr. Maverick did pop over to the side hall. Why do you ask?"
Mr. Maverick? Mirabella's eyes narrowed slightly, but she quickly shook her head. "It's nothing."
The shadow in the underground chamber earlier... hopefully, it was just her imagination.
James glanced at her, the black jade in his fingers remaining cold despite being held for so long. He lowered his gaze, studying its shape, and his mind drifted to the strange occurrences that had surrounded Mirabella in the past.
His heart sank a bit, sensing the jade’s appearance wasn't a good sign.
Just then, Mirabella's phone rang, breaking the quiet in the car.
It was Reid calling.
As soon as Mirabella picked up, Reid's breathless voice filled the line, "Miss Mira, are you alright over there?"
Hearing the chaotic noise mixed with gunfire on the other end, Mirabella straightened up a bit. "I'm fine. Did something happen on your end?"
Reid, maneuvering the steering wheel while dodging bullets, felt a slight wave of relief at her words. "We got ambushed halfway. The attackers are relentless. Thankfully, you weren't with the convoy; otherwise, it would've been dangerous."
