The Double or more Life of the Fake Heiress (Mirabella) novel Chapter 1853

The Elder tapped his fingers lightly, his expression shifting as he asked, "Do you think this will come back to bite us?"

"When have you and I ever been involved in something like this?" Jaime shot back.

The Elder lifted his gaze slightly, meeting Jaime's eyes with a knowing look. After a moment, he chuckled, "In that case, someone else is probably more worried about Miss Mira than we are."

Jaime got what the Elder was hinting at, but thinking about Penelope's recent behavior, he couldn't shake off a feeling. "Elder, don't you think Penelope's been acting a bit off lately?"

The Elder paused, "What do you mean?"

Jaime hesitated, "It's hard to explain, maybe she's just been too calm about the heir assessment?"

The Elder waved his hand dismissively, "Everyone goes through a period of adjustment after a setback, especially when they've underestimated their opponent. Her reaction seems normal to me."

"Even so, I still can't help but feel—"

The Elder cut him off. "You're overthinking. Penelope's always been under our thumb; she can't stir up any trouble. Even if she were to get rebellious ideas, remember what her mother Melissa did. Would she really betray her own family?"

The Elder seemed unconcerned, chalking up Jaime's worries to paranoia.

Without the Council's backing, Penelope was nothing. The idea of her rebelling was laughable.

"With Keir's situation up in the air, our main focus now is to replace key people in the guild with our own. Even if he returns, once our plans are set, what can he do?" The Elder's lips curled into a sly smile.

The heir assessment was just a front; revamping the Davis family was the real goal.
