Meanwhile, Reid made his way back to report in. Grady glanced at the contract in his hands, finally processing everything Reid had told him. "…Are you saying Miss Mira is familiar with the powers behind The Mirror?"
Reid recalled the unique embroidery on the cuffs of that group and their deference to the man with the golden hair. He nodded with certainty, "No doubt about it."
Grady's face showed a mix of emotions but was ultimately relieved. No wonder she seemed unfazed by the heir assessment, like she could breeze through it if she wanted to. Turns out, she really could.
"The mastermind behind the ambush on our convoy was Lady Melissa," Reid added, catching Grady's eye.
Grady had already tasked some people to investigate, but they hadn't turned up anything yet. Hearing Reid's update, he was momentarily taken aback.
Reid quickly clarified, "This also came from one of Miss Mira's friends."
He hadn't meant to eavesdrop, but Mirabella and Miles were chatting in the living room without any concern for privacy, so he couldn't help but overhear. Besides, with The Mirror's formidable intel network, you could bet their info was spot-on.
Just then, one of Grady's subordinates walked in, right on time to confirm the findings. It matched Reid's report exactly.
"Melissa must have thought Miss Mira was blocking Miss Penelope's path, which is why she went to such lengths," Reid said, his voice heavy. "Luckily, Miss Mira got out of the car halfway."
Otherwise, with nearly thirty people in that convoy and only ten making it out, it was clear Melissa never intended for Miss Mira to survive.
"I wonder if Miss Penelope had a hand in this," Reid mused with a sigh.
Truth be told, he'd always admired Penelope. She was exceptional, rarely did you find a woman more capable than most men. The only downside was her closeness to the council of elders.
Grady's eyes narrowed slightly. "She wouldn't."
