The Double or more Life of the Fake Heiress (Mirabella) novel Chapter 1858

The Next Day...

Mirabella and James took off from Ravenshade in the morning, leaving Dan behind to heal up since his injuries were a bit more serious. Their return was pretty low-key, not attracting much attention.

Mirabella didn’t head back to the Davis family estate; instead, she just told Reid to give her a ring if anything came up. By the time they got to James’s place, it was already past noon, and Trevor was hanging around.

He shot the breeze with Mirabella for a bit, knowing she'd been part of their adventure. With a grin, he asked, “So, Mirabella, what do you think of that floating palace?”

James lifted an eyebrow at Trevor, then turned around, grabbed a bottle of water, opened it, and handed it to Mirabella as he took a seat beside her.

“Pretty impressive to think they had those building techniques centuries back,” Mirabella mused.

“Yeah, it’s a shame it’s all gone now,” Trevor sighed, thinking back to yesterday’s fiasco, his eyes naturally landing on his son. If it wasn’t for James leading him away, maybe he could’ve found something valuable in that palace.

James leaned back, casually draping an arm around Mirabella, his fingers playing with a strand of her hair, acting like he didn’t notice his dad’s glare. “So, what was your team hoping to find in that underground palace?” he asked.

“Well, usually you’re looking for artifacts, right? What else would we be after?” Trevor said, sitting up a bit straighter. “But yeah, you nailed it. We were hoping there’d be signs of a meteorite. Too bad someone triggered the mechanism, and it was all for nothing.”

The palace had caved in completely, and now there was no way to tell if a meteorite ever existed there.

Just as Trevor finished, something clicked in his mind. He squinted at James, “Did you send me away on purpose? Were you the one who set off the mechanism?”

Given James’s usual lack of interest in ancient relics, it seemed suspicious that he’d suddenly want to check out the palace. The more Trevor thought about it, the less it felt like a coincidence.
