As soon as Wyatt heard that strange noise, he took a couple of steps forward, curious to see what was going on. But before he knew it, a sudden flash of red light burst above him, followed by a laser beam slicing through the air right toward him.
Startled, Wyatt jumped back just in time, narrowly missing the beam, and Miles, who was right beside him, managed to dodge it too.
When they looked down, they saw a deep pit where they’d just been standing. Wyatt’s skin prickled with fear, his eyes wide. “That thing’s got some serious power…”
He shuddered, thinking about what could’ve happened if he hadn't reacted so quickly. That laser could've cut right through him.
This place is supposed to be a quiet, old-fashioned village?
Wyatt was utterly confused.
The commotion had caused the gate to swing open again. The village chief glanced at the ground, then at Wyatt and the others, relieved to see they were okay.
Pressing a button on the doorframe, the chief finally spoke, “You shouldn’t wander around aimlessly.”
Wyatt cleared his throat, standing up straight to explain, “Sorry, I was just curious and wanted to have a look around.”
“Sometimes curiosity isn’t a good thing,” the chief’s voice was gruff, carrying a hint of warning. After that, he opened the gate wider, “Come on in.”
Wyatt chuckled awkwardly and nodded, thinking there’s only one word for this village: Weird! Not just the village, but the people too! Wyatt was the last to step inside, and just as the chief was about to close the door, Wyatt turned back, pointing at the laser gadget on the door. “I was wondering, what's this for?”
The chief latched the wooden gate with a clang and answered nonchalantly, “Keeps the wild boars away.”
