Martin was sweating bullets. “I’ll go in first and give Mr. Lane a heads–up.”

Halsey stepped forward. “No need!”

She pushed open the office door herself.

Shaun and Warren were both inside. Shaun looked up, surprised to see Halsey.

Warren froze. “Ms. Mallin? What are you doing here? Martin, how could you not tell us she was coming?”

Shaun immediately stood and walked toward Halsey. “What are you doing here?”

Martin looked guilty. “I…”

Halsey waved him off. “Don’t blame Martin. He tried to stop me, but I came in anyway.”

Shaun frowned. “Okay. But why did you come here? Aren’t you supposed to be at school?”

Halsey shook her head. “I didn’t feel like going today. I came to check on you.”

Her clear, beautiful eyes flicked from Shaun to Warren and Martin. “What’s with these looks? You all seem like you’re not happy to see me. Am I bothering you?”

Warren quickly said, “No, no! We just didn’t expect you.”

Shaun added, “You should’ve called me before coming.”

Halsey sat down on the sofa. “If I had called, do you think you would’ve told me about the news today?”

Shaun froze. “You already know?”

Halsey tilted her head. “So you think you did nothing wrong?”
