Bailee’s eyes gleamed with a cold light as she thought, ‘Most understanding? Jackson, after all these years together, you still haven’t figured me out.
I’m not all that, not even in the slightest. If anything, I’m the kind of person who keeps score. Otherwise, back then…
Bailee drew in a deep breath, shaking off the weight of old memories, and swore to herself, ‘Just wait. I’ll make sure you pay for the choice you made today.
When Kayla returned, she found Bailee staring at Jackson’s back with a dark expression. The warmth that usually softened her face was gone, replaced by icy bitterness and a raw, consuming hatred.
Kayla’s heart skipped, fear rising as she wondered what had just happened.
“Mom, I’m back,” she said, breaking the heavy silence.
Bailee turned toward her. In an instant, the coldness and hate in her eyes vanished, replaced by a cheerful smile. “Oh, there you are, Kay. Hungry? I had them prepare food for you. Come and eat.”
As she spoke, she tossed the cup on the table into the trash. Her voice was gentle, her smile the same as always.
If Kayla hadn’t seen the look in Bailee’s eyes moments earlier, she would have thought the killing intent had only been her imagination.
Kayla’s gaze drifted to the discarded cup before she set down her backpack and walked over with a smile. “Perfect timing. I am hungry. What’s on the menu?”
The servants had already set the dishes neatly on the table. Kayla took a bite and exaggerated her delight. “Wow, how is this so good? Mom, did you eat already?”
But Bailee, who normally fussed over every little thing at mealtimes, gave no response.
Kayla looked up and saw her staring blankly into the distance, lost in thought.
A wave of dread washed over her. “Mom? Mom, what’s wrong?” she called out.
Bailee startled back to the present and forced a laugh. She quickly pointed to the beef on the plate and said, “No, nothing. I’m just tired, that’s all. Here, try this one too, it’s good.”
As she spoke, her smile carried a trace of strain, with a bitter edge beneath it.
Kayla had thought about telling Bailee what had happened with Max and asking her what truly went on back then. But when she saw how worn out and unsettled Bailee looked, she gave up on the idea.
‘Forget it. I can bring it up in a few days, Kayla sighed inwardly.
Then, she said gently, “If you’re tired, go rest early. Don’t worry about me. I’ll eat and head upstairs to finish

Bailee did not argue. Too much had happened that day, and she felt drained. She indeed needed time alone
to think.
Watching Bailee leave with such a heavy heart, Kayla lost her appetite as well.
Kayla called for the maid to clear the table. Just as she was about to go upstairs, her gaze caught on a cup in
the trash bin.
Something seemed to click in her mind, and she turned to the maid, asking, “Did my mother go out today?”
The maid nodded while gathering the dishes, smiling as she replied, “Mrs. Sexton made lunch for Mr. Sexton today and even took it to his office. They’re really such a loving couple, still inseparable after all these years.”
The maid only meant to flatter, but to Kayla it sounded painfully ironic.
Kayla wondered, ‘Loving and inseparable? If they truly were, Mom wouldn’t be in this state. Something must have happened at the company, that’s why she came back so shaken.’
With that thought, her mood grew heavy. All she could focus on was what Jackson might have done at the company that had left Bailee so distressed.

The next morning, Kayla came downstairs and found Bailee sitting at the dining table. Her eyes were swollen, her face tired.
Bailee stirred her coffee with a rose–handled spoon, but her gaze was vacant, fixed on nothing.
“Morning, Mom,” Kayla said softly.
Bailee gave no sign of hearing her, no response at all.
Kayla frowned and leaned closer. She waved her hand in front of Bailee’s face and called again, “Mom?”
Bailee finally blinked back to herself and forced a smile. Yet that smile looked worse than tears, and it made Kayla’s chest tighten.
“What’s wrong?” Bailee asked.
Kayla shook her head. “Nothing, just calling out to you.” As she spoke, she reached for the toast spread with jam that had been set at the main seat, only for Bailee to snatch it away and toss it straight into the trash.
Bailee said, “That one’s dirty. Eat something else.”
Kayla arched a brow and thought, ‘Dirty? But that’s Dad’s seat. That toast was missing two bites. Someone had already eaten it. How does that make it dirty?‘
Even so, she did not press further. Instead, she lifted her glass of milk and took a light sip, though her eyes stayed fixed on Bailee.

Seeing Bailee’s low spirits, Kayla lost her appetite as well. She leaned close with a soft, coaxing tone. “Mom, will you take me to school today? I want to spend some time with you
