Her voice dropped, quiet and cold. “You make me like some heartless villain, and you look so pissed. What’s the plan, Marianna? Gonna throw hands for your sick little knight?”
Kayla suddenly raised her voice without warning, Marianna flinched, instinctively stepping back, thinking, for a second that Kayla might actually hit her.
But what caught her even more off guard was how easily Kayla admitted it. There was no denial, no attempt to explain it away.
She’s not even gonna defend herself?‘ Marianna thought, stunned, ‘I had this whole speech planned out, thought she’d lie, and I could blame her in front of everyone. But now what? She just owned up to it. What am I supposed to do with that?‘
Kayla’s words hit Marianna like a punch thrown into cotton–soft, pointless, and frustratingly hard to respond
Still, Marianna quickly regrouped. She glanced around the hallway and noticed the growing number of students watching them.
She raised her voice again, trying to get control of the narrative. “No. I’m not trying to hit you. But since you know what you did was wrong, why hog Dav’s car…”
Before she could say more, Kayla lifted a hand and cut her off. “Excuse me? What do you mean by I hog his car? Get your facts straight.
“That’s the car my family sent to pick me up. Always has been. Just because Davon hitched a ride a few times. doesn’t mean it magically became his.”
Marianna’s eyes went wide. She looked around again, noticing the students whispering and side–eyeing her. Panic rose in her chest as she stammered, “Wait. No, it was… Dav’s car. I mean, I thought it was.”
Marianna thought, ‘Weird. Didn’t Kayla use to care so much about Davon’s image? Why is she suddenly calling out his background like this in public? Isn’t she scared he’ll get mad?‘
Kayla smirked inwardly. ‘So she does know, huh? Still playing dumb. Whatever. Now is not the time to blow up Davon’s fake trust–fund baby act. Not until he coughs up that 1.5 million.’”
She flipped her hair back and said, “Doesn’t matter if you knew or not. What matters is, I don’t owe Davon a ride. I don’t have to share my car with him, and you don’t get to question that.”
After speaking, Kayla turned like she was done with the conversation, but Marianna stepped in her way again. “Dav’s not here, so sure, say what you want.
“But you knew it was gonna pour, and you still left him out there. He’s sick because of you. Seriously, how selfish can you be? Doesn’t your conscience eat at you?”
Kayla didn’t flinch. In fact, she smiled and even nodded slightly, like she was genuinely impressed. “Wow, you really make it sound convincing. Maybe I am selfish. Not like you, so kind and thoughtful.”

She leaned in, her eyes twinkling. “Then tell me, Saint Marianna, if you were so kind, why didn’t you call a cab for him yourself? If you did, he wouldn’t have caught a cold. Am I right?”
