The Heiress Chooses Madness novel Chapter 181

Chapter 181

This is on me, not you. You’re so young, and I made you deal with all of this,Bailee continued.

Just as they were having their moment, a snorting sound came from Bailee’s arms, followed by something round and wiggly squirming between them.

Kayla glanced down and saw the little pig in her mother’s arms. Her eye twitched, and all her sadness and guilt evaporated instantly. Mom, since when are you raising a pig?

Out of all the pets in the worldcats, dogswhy a pig?Kayla thought.

Bailee glanced at the pig in her arms, and a cold smile spread across her lips. Pigs are great. I’m going to take real good care of him, watch him grow bigger and fatter, until he can barely move. Just thinking about it makes me happy.”

Kayla listened to her mother’s words, and a chill ran down her spine for some reason. She had the distinct feeling that Bailee wasn’t just talking about the pig.

The words were about a pig, but somehow, they weren’t.

At the police station

Miss, are these the guys who tried to assault you in that alley?an officer asked.

Kayla had gotten a call from the police early that morning asking her to come identify the men who’d attacked her that day.

Kayla glanced at the group standing crookedly behind the bars, and her eye twitched. Yeah, that’s them. But what the hell happened to them?

Did they all get cursed or something? Did they piss off the wrong people?she wondered.

It had only been a few days, but every single one of them had broken arms or legs, and their faces were so swollen they looked nothing like they used to. If Kayla hadn’t memorized their faces that day, she probably wouldn’t even recognize them now.

The officer looked just as confused. It’s the weirdest thing.

I don’t know if they’re cursed or what, but the past few days, no matter where they went, they’d randomly trip over rocks, get hit by falling flower pots from balconies, or run into drunk guys at night who’d just beat the crap out of them for no reason.

You wouldn’t believe it. When we finally tracked them down, they didn’t even try to run. In fact, they were practically begging us to bring them in. I think they wanted the station to protect them from whatever bad luck’s been following them around.”

Kayla’s eyes widened in shock. There’s actually stuff that weird happening?she thought. But the more she heard, the more satisfied she felt. Karma really did come through sometimes.

This isn’t some curse. It’s straightup karma. Goes to show you can’t do bad things and get away with it. The universe always comes for you.Kayla shook her fist at the guys behind the bars, grinning without holding

back.

The officer couldn’t help but laugh at her attitude. Curse or not, these guys are definitely getting hit with assault charges. Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you get justice and they face the law.”

Kayla smiled and thanked him. Thanks, officer. But from what I heard that day, someone paid them to come after me. Please make sure you investigate that.

Whoever hired thugs to hurt someone is way worse than these guys. If they’d pay to hurt me, they’d do it to someone else too. People like that are a threat to society. You need to find them and bring them to justice so everyone can be safe.

The officer nodded seriously. Don’t worry. We won’t let any bad guys slip through.

Kayla smiled, satisfied, and nodded.

Kayla left the police station and checked the time. It was still early, so she headed to Yoeland branch of Hayes Group based on the info her private investigator had dug up.

Kayla had been sitting in the CEO’s office for a while now, but the man across from her hadn’t said a word. Mr. Hayes? Mr. Hayes?Kayla called out softly, trying to get his attention.

Caleb Hayes snapped out of it and looked at the girl in front of him with a stern expression. She looked about seventy percent like Bailee had as a child. Memories flashed through his mind like slides, and his expression grew distant. You’re Kayla? Bailee’s daughter?

Kayla met Caleb’s gaze calmly. She’d actually seen Caleb before in her previous lifeat Bailee’s funeral.

Back then, Caleb had this defeated, broken air about him, like he’d been swallowed by darkness. It had scared her, so she hadn’t really paid attention to what he looked like.

Now, taking a good look at him, Kayla noticed his features were sharp and sculpted, every line defined and strong. He had this intense, commanding presence that demanded respect.

His eyes were especially strikingdeep and piercing, like a hawk hunting at night, as if they could see straight through you.

The most noticeable thing was the obvious knife scar across his brow bone. It gave him this wild, untamed edge, a dangerous quality that was hard to describe. His powerful presence matched perfectly with his sharp, slightly dangerous features, creating an intimidating presence.

Kayla didn’t flinch under his intense scrutiny. Yes,she replied calmly.

Caleb raised an eyebrow as he studied the composed girl in front of him. His cold expression suddenly broke into a smile. Never thought that little crybaby Bailee would have a daughter as levelheaded as you. That’s actually pretty surprising! You got lucky catching me at the Yoeland branch.”
