The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 11

Ramona had barely taken a few steps when a man stepped out of the car and opened the back door for her.

She recognized him immediately—it was the same man who had handed her the business card last time. Today, though, he wasn’t in uniform. Instead, he wore a simple black suit and dark sunglasses, which made him look much more approachable.

Ramona smiled politely and slid into the back seat.

It was clear he was here just for her; they were the only two in the car.

“Excuse me, you are…?”

“I’m Mr. Jordon’s personal assistant. You can call me Ash.”

Ash seemed to know exactly what she was about to ask as soon as she spoke.

“Ash, why did your boss choose me for this arrangement? I don’t think we’ve ever met, have we?”

She was careful, testing the waters.

Ash offered a small smile. “I’m not privy to Mr. Jordon’s personal affairs. But he only recently returned to the country, so I doubt he’s met you before, Ms. Jarrett.”

“Then…” Ramona hesitated, curiosity getting the better of her. “What does your boss look like?”

He’d been so mysterious, refusing to show himself. Could he be…not much to look at?

It was just an arrangement, sure, but if he was truly unattractive, she wanted to be prepared.

Ash couldn’t help chuckling at her question. He’d worked with Ethan for years and never once had a woman worried about Ethan’s looks.

But he quickly composed himself. “I’m probably not the right person to comment. You’ll see for yourself soon enough, Ms. Jarrett.”

Ramona sighed inwardly. That probably meant he was plain at best. She lowered her expectations.

Soon, the car pulled up in front of a gorgeous townhouse on the city’s edge. Though technically in the downtown area, it was tucked away and offered plenty of privacy.

Ash explained that this was an exclusive, members-only restaurant—and tonight, Ethan had reserved the entire place.

Ramona followed a server inside, Ash and the bodyguards remaining discreetly at the entrance. A quiet attendant led her to a private dining room.

“Mr. Jordon?” she called softly.

The crystal chandelier bathed the room in a soft, opulent glow, lighting up a tall, imposing figure by the window.

She hesitated, then called again, and finally saw his face—a striking, almost intimidating visage. His features were sharp: deep-set brows, a straight nose, and perfectly sculpted lips.

Ramona stared for several seconds before his cool, low voice snapped her back to reality. “Yes, that’s me. Please, have a seat, Ms. Jarrett.”

“Uh…sure. Thank you.”

She quickly averted her gaze, suddenly forgetting all about making a good impression.

Wasn’t he supposed to be plain-looking?
