“I could tell,” Ramona said with a small smile.
Ethan seemed to relax then, leaning back in his chair. The black shirt he wore was slightly wrinkled, outlining his athletic frame even more.
“I heard that you’ve agreed to the marriage arrangement.”
“Yes,” Ramona nodded.
“Our family is quite traditional. From engagement to wedding, every step matters to us. I’ve been busy lately and don’t want to rush things. Ms. Jarrett, there may be a wait of a few days. But if you have any other requests, feel free to let me know.”
“That’s fine. I’ll leave all the arrangements in your hands, Mr. Jordon.”
“Alright,” Ethan replied crisply, clearly satisfied with her answer. He glanced at his watch. “That’s about all for tonight…”
“Mr. Jordon, I’m sure you’ve learned about my situation. May I ask why you decided to go through with this marriage?”
“I’m not interested in your assets or the Covington family. I’m simply at the age where it’s time to settle down, and your family is a good match.”
Ethan seemed to see right through Ramona’s thoughts. She had wondered if his choice had anything to do with her substantial inheritance. But before coming here, she’d done her homework—the Jordon family was formidable in both wealth and influence. There were plenty of business tycoons who couldn’t compete with them, so it couldn’t be just about money.
“Your family’s pressuring you?”
“Something like that. But let me be clear: I only need an obedient wife. I expect full cooperation in everything.”
The moment he said that, Ramona understood exactly what kind of arrangement this was. Jotham had once pursued her for the same reason—she was easy to manage, alone in the world with no one to rely on.
Ramona met Ethan’s gaze calmly and spoke directly, “I’m the primary heir to Covington Group. The Covington family has deep roots in Havencrest City. If the Jordon family is looking to expand, this alliance would be the most straightforward way. Meanwhile, as someone who’s just rejoined her family, I’m vulnerable on my own.
Our marriage gives the Jordon family another bargaining chip and gives me more leverage to stand my ground. It’s mutually beneficial—only fair.”
Ethan didn’t reply, but nodded slightly, his acceptance clear.
His time was obviously valuable. No sooner had the two stepped out of the restaurant than someone came over to remind him about his flight.
Ramona, perceptive as ever, immediately said there was no need for Ethan to see her off; she’d call a cab herself.
Ethan didn’t protest. Ever the gentleman, he still walked her to a waiting car, and only turned to leave after watching her get in safely.
On the way home, Ramona’s phone rang—it was Fenton, checking in after hearing tonight was their first meeting.
She told him honestly that things had gone smoothly; if there was any downside, it was that Ethan’s presence was simply overwhelming. Being around him, it was hard not to feel the pressure.
Late that night, Ramona had just finished her shower when she noticed her phone lighting up with a call.
She barely answered before Jotham’s voice came through, “Ramona, it’s so late, why aren’t you home? Is something wrong? You haven’t answered my calls.”
Ramona held the phone to her ear, but her mind was elsewhere. Right then, she was captivated by the city lights outside her window, silently congratulating herself on her excellent taste in apartments.
