The Paper Wife’s Empire novel Chapter 30

He had always been blunt, never caring to spare anyone’s pride, and women were of no interest to him.

So even though he was well past the age when most people settled down, no one in the Jordon family dared to prod him about marriage.

Someone like him—having his seat taken by Ramona, yet instead of flying into a rage, he actually turned to her with a calm, almost pleasant tone to ask about her solution?

Ramona felt the weight of his gaze settle on her, the pressure mounting, but she drew a steady breath and kept her voice soft as she continued, “We should respect what’s already happened and turn a mistake into a better arrangement.”

She paused, letting her eyes sweep over the spacious dinner table.

“There’s plenty of room here. Adding another chair isn’t difficult. The host can quickly set up a seat of the same standard for Mr. Jordon right beside me. That way, Covington Group saves face, Mr. Jordon’s graciousness stands out, and the host’s flexibility and sincerity in handling the situation are clear for all to see. Isn’t that better than forcing me to move and creating unnecessary conflict and embarrassment for everyone?”

As her words faded, the entire banquet hall fell silent. Everyone stared at Ramona, stunned by her composure and intelligence.

This was supposed to be an obscure illegitimate daughter? She was a master of logic, pure and simple.

No one expected Ramona to resolve the deadlock so swiftly. Solenne’s face had gone ghostly pale.

At some point, Yancey had slipped back into the hall. Seeing his cousin at the center of attention, radiating such poise, he finally allowed himself to breathe a little easier.

Ethan studied Ramona for a moment, the corner of his mouth curving up just slightly. Then he turned to the event coordinator and said, “Let’s do as Ms. Jarrett suggests.”

His tone was level, betraying nothing.

But that was all it took. With Ethan’s acceptance, the hosts looked as though they’d been granted a royal pardon.

“Of course, Mr. Jordon.”

In no time, a server brought over an additional chair.

After this unexpected interlude, the dinner officially began. Ramona still drew every eye in the room, but no one dared question her any longer.
