Sloane calmly packed up her needles, not even looking up as she said, “I don’t want to tell you.”
The old director didn’t get angry at her blunt rejection. Instead, he chuckled and responded good–naturedly, “Alright, alright. You don’t have to tell me. But would you be willing to come work at my hospital? You name your salary.”
Sloane blinked, clearly caught off guard. She hadn’t expected a job offer–especially not one so generous–considering she was only eighteen.
Before she could reply, the attending physician scoffed from the side. “Director, she’s just a kid. That patient pulled through by pure luck.”
The director turned on him with a glare and barked, “What do you know! That was the lost technique. And you saw her bring Mr. Clark back from the brink with your own eyes. Someone with her skill deserves far better than what we could offer!”
Then he turned back to Sloane with a kind smile, clearly trying to persuade her. “You don’t have to answer right away. Just think about it. If you’re ever interested, reach out anytime.”
Sloane couldn’t help warming up a little to this adorable old man. He was persistent, but not pushy. “Alright. I’ll think about it.”
Just as she stepped out of the ward, a loud commotion echoed down the corridor–screams, footsteps, and pure chaos.
A man with a wild look in his eyes was storming through the hospital, waving a long blade. People screamed and scattered, trying to get away.
At that moment, Benjamin and the director had just exited the ward. They froze as the madman charged straight at them, eyes bloodshot and blade raised.
Benjamin instinctively threw himself in front of the director to shield him.
The blade came down fast.
But suddenly, a hand shot out from the side,
Sloane caught the sharp edge with her bare palm. Blood streamed between her fingers, dripping onto the hospital’s pristine white floor.
Gasps rang out.

Without hesitation, Sloane twisted, using the force of her turn to wrench the weapon from the man’s hands. Then she kicked hard–her foot slammed into his chest.
The man flew several feet backward, crashing to the floor.
But he didn’t stay down. Like a wild animal, he clawed his way up again, eyes burning red, cursing and screaming as he charged once more.
Everyone froze–helpless, panicked.
Just then, a black shadow streaked through the corridor like lightning.
Lucas.
He stepped forward and delivered a clean punch to the man’s abdomen. The attacker bent over with a grunt, only to be caught by Lucas’s arm locking around his throat. In one fluid motion, Lucas had him immobilized.
No matter how the man flailed, he couldn’t break free.
Moments later, hospital security finally arrived and dragged the attacker away.
