Sloane caught Lucas’s gaze and froze for a moment. But she quickly brushed it off. No could recognize me, she told herself. Her disguise skills had been honed under her uncle’s strict training. There was no way Lucas could see through it.

Meanwhile, the hospital director had to step out to deal with the aftermath of the earlier incident. Before leaving, he repeatedly told Sloane to wait for him to return.

As the nurse carefully wrapped up Sloane’s injured hand, she spoke with gentle concern. “Make sure to keep the wound dry. Change the bandage on time. And if anything feels off, come back to the hospital immediately.”

“Got it. Thank you,” Sloane nodded politely.

Benjamin approached as soon as she stepped out of the room, gratitude written all over his face. “I really don’t know how to thank you. If it weren’t for you, I probably wouldn’t even be standing here. And what happened with Mr. Clark–you stopped a disaster before it could happen. You’ve done so much, not just for me but for this entire hospital.”

He made a move to bow, but Sloane quickly raised a hand to stop him. “That’s too much, Mr. Benjamin. Anyone else in my shoes would’ve done the same. It wasn’t a big deal.”

But Benjamin clearly didn’t see it that way. “No, no. Saving two lives in one day? That’s no small favor. I’ll never forget what you did.”

Sloane wasn’t great at handling this kind of emotional gratitude, so she let him talk, nodding occasionally just to be polite.

What really made her uncomfortable, though, was Lucas’s eyes on her. His gaze felt like it could strip away her disguise.

Lucas smiled faintly, but there was something behind that smile–something probing. “Yeah, I guess that makes sense.”

Benjamin looked between the two of them, puzzled. Lucas knows someone like her? Since when?
