Daniel was still half–delirious, muttering incoherent words as his limbs flailed around.
Larry raised his hand and knocked him out.
Whitney pulled her coat tighter, a flash of venom flickering in her
eyes.
She ran over to Larry in tears, yelling at the top of her lungs, “If you hadn’t shown up in time, those two shameless scumbags would’ve ruined me!”
She pointed toward the crowd, directly at the Rivers family. “Your family allowed Sloane and Daniel to sneak off together during our Houston family banquet to do something this disgraceful! I was nearly hurt because of it. The Rivers family owes the Houston family an explanation!”
Madam Mathilda had only just arrived, completely confused by the confrontation.
She slammed her cane against the ground with a deep, echoing thud and snapped, “Ms. Whitney, watch your words! What does this have to do with the Rivers family or Sloane? Don’t go around making baseless accusations.”
Everyone who’d just shown up had only seen Daniel–no one else.
But Whitney didn’t care. She yanked Trent out in front of everyone. “Trent saw Sloane and Daniel together with his own eyes.”
Pushed into the spotlight, Trent had no choice but to go along. “Yes, I saw them.”
“You’re lying!” Natalie stepped forward and stared him down. “Just now, you said you saw Daniel following Sloane in this direction. Now you’re suddenly changing your story, claiming you saw them meet in private. What exactly is your family playing at, slandering the Rivers family like this?”
In one sentence, Natalie elevated the issue to a conflict between two families.
Trent immediately clammed up. “I… I…”
Whitney knew things were going south and jumped in to cut her off. “Natalie, stop trying to confuse everyone. The truth is plain to see.”
Clap, clap, clap! Sloane stepped out from the shadows. “The Houston family truly knows how to put on a show. Ms. Whitney, your ability to twist facts is truly unmatched.”

When Larry saw Sloane’s face, he froze completely, as if all his senses had been shut off.
Lucas followed right behind her, his expression sharp and stern.
He scanned the crowd, his gaze finally settling on Daniel with obvious disgust. “If you want the truth, why not ask the person involved?”
Without another word, he strode up to Daniel and landed a solid kick to his gut. Daniel, who had been unconscious, let out a muffled groan and jolted awake, clutching his stomach.
“Speak. Who exactly did you come here to meet?” Lucas’s voice was frigid, each word cutting like ice.
He stepped on Daniel’s chest, forcing a pained grimace from him. Daniel didn’t even dare to make a sound.
