Whitney’s head snapped to the side from the force of the slap, a bright red handprint quickly blooming across her pale cheek. She stared at Larry in disbelief. “Why did you hit me?”
The slap had come so suddenly that not even Whitney herself could react–let alone Sloane.
“Apologize to Ms. Sloane,” Larry said, his voice low and commanding, allowing no room for argument. “You’re the one who made a mess. Don’t drag the Houston family down with you.”
Whitney trembled under the weight of his icy glare.
Her lips quivered as she turned her head slowly toward Sloane, her molars clenched tight. “Sloane… I’m… I’m sorry.”
Lucas stood at Sloane’s side, his tone cool and sharp. “That sounded pretty half–hearted, Ms. Whitney. Doesn’t seem like you mean it.”
Whitney was so furious she nearly passed out. Being forced to bow her head to Sloane- especially in front of Lucas–was beyond humiliating. But with Larry’s piercing gaze burning into her back, she didn’t dare resist.
Grinding her teeth, she took two stiff steps forward. Under the gaze of the entire crowd, she bent at the waist–lower and lower–until she was at a perfect right angle.
Her fists clenched tightly at the hems of her coat, knuckles turning white from the strain. Loose strands of hair fell over her face, hiding the anger and bitterness twisting her features.
“Sloane, I apologize for what I’ve done. It was my fault. Please forgive me.”
Only then did Sloane speak. “Since Ms. Whitney knows she was wrong, I’ll let it go this time.” Her gaze sharpened. “But you’d better remember this lesson. If it happens again, not even the Houston family can save you.”
Most of the people present dismissed Sloane’s words, thinking she was just leaning on Lucas’s power,
Only Lucas and Larry knew she meant every word.
Larry stepped forward, his eyes fixed on Sloane’s face. “Ms. Sloane, what happened today was due to my failure to keep things in check. I hope you’ll give me a chance to make it up to you.”
Lucas’s expression chilled. He subtly stepped in front of Sloane. “Mr. Larry, maybe you should focus on keeping your own people in line. My fiancée doesn’t need your concern.”
