A chill surged from Whitney’s feet straight up to the top of her skull. The room spun around
her.
Her lips trembled uncontrollably, but not a single sound escaped. Her mind was filled with flashes of the gruesome scene when her parents died–and the terrifying way Larry had taken control of everything ever since.
She knew all too well how ruthless and cold her brother could be. If he said it, he’d do it.
“Larry…” she finally squeezed out a weak whisper from her dry throat.
All she got in return was a chilling laugh that sounded like it came straight from hell.
“What’s wrong? Finally scared now?” Larry’s voice echoed through the empty room, each word landing like a hammer blow on Whitney’s heart.
Her body swayed uncontrollably, her back drenched in cold sweat. She felt like she was trapped in an icy tomb, swallowed by darkness and fear.
She crawled to Larry’s feet, knocking her forehead against the floor over and over. “I was wrong. I swear I know I was wrong… I’ll behave from now on… I promise…”
But Larry didn’t even flinch. He turned his back to her, not sparing her a single glance. “I don’t want to hear that. If you can’t handle being the Houston family’s young lady… it’s just one more tablet on the altar.”
Whitney’s head froze mid–bow. Her whole body began trembling like a leaf. “I can, I can do it. I’ll be the perfect Houston family heiress… I will.”
Larry kicked her hand off his pant leg in disgust, as if she were something filthy. “And from now on, stay away from Sloane. If I ever find out you’ve laid a finger on her… you’ll wish you were never born.”
With that, Larry turned and strode out without looking back.
Whitney collapsed on the ground, her body still shaking uncontrollably.
She knew Larry wasn’t bluffing. He meant it–he really would kill her.
It took a while before she could calm down. Larry’s final warning echoed in her head.
Sloane?

When did Larry and Sloane even meet? Why would he specifically warn her about Sloane if they weren’t connected?
Elsewhere, Sloane had politely turned down Madam Mathilda’s offer and insisted on returning to her own apartment.
“All right. Your apartment is closer to campus–it is more convenient,” Madam Mathilda relented, then turned to make small talk with Lucas.
Lucas wore his usual polite, detached smile, handling Madam Mathilda’s chitchat with practiced ease.
Sloane couldn’t help but admire him. No wonder he built the Hawthorne Group into Stonebridge’s top powerhouse. He really knows how to navigate people.
Once Madam Mathilda finally left, Sloane turned and got into Lucas’s car.
