Sloane’s gaze was firm, burning with quiet determination. “One day, I’ll make them regret ever casting me aside.”

Lucas looked at her, something stirring deep in his chest–recognition, admiration, and a strong sense of resonance.

In her eyes was the kind of fire that wouldn’t be dimmed by hardship. No matter what stood in her way, she would never surrender. That strength, that defiance–that’s exactly what had always drawn him to her.

He smiled faintly, his voice low and steady. “Sloane, I believe in you. You can do it.”

Sloane turned to him. “We can do it.”

Confidence bloomed in Lucas’s expression. “Right. We will.”

Just then, Lucas got a call and had to leave in a hurry.

Sloane had planned to spend the day refining a new batch of pills, but before she could even change into her work clothes, Mr. Jordan hit her with a barrage of back–to–back calls.

Left with no choice, she changed and returned to campus.

“Haha! Sloane, we did it! The experiment was a success–and it’s all thanks to you!” Mr. Jordan’s face was flushed with excitement. “I’ve decided to include your name on the paper and give you a share of the profit.”

Sloane pulled out a chair and sat down. “Congratulations, Mr. Jordan. But there’s really no need for a profit share. All I did was offer a bit of guidance. You and the others did the actual work–it’s got nothing to do with me.”

“Nonsense,” Mr. Jordan insisted. “If not for your insight, they wouldn’t even have realized they were going down the wrong path. Who knows how long they would’ve wasted.”

He clapped a hand down decisively. “It’s settled.”

Sloane didn’t argue any further and took the opportunity to bring up her real reason for coming.

“You want to apply for second–year courses?” Mr. Jordan stared at her, stunned. “We’re only three months into the semester, and you’ve already finished the entire freshman curriculum?”

Sloane nodded. In truth, she was nearly done with the sophomore coursework as well–but she didn’t want to startle him.

Mr. Jordan studied her for a long moment, trying to gauge the sincerity of her claim. But thinking back on how she had just helped with a graduate–level experiment, he realized it wasn’t impossible.

“Alright, I’ll approve it.”

“Thank you, Mr. Jordan.” Sloane stood to leave.

“Wait a second,” he called out, flipping open a journal on his desk and handing it to her. “This is our next research project. It’s from the most respected scientific journal in Country A. These are the most advanced findings in the field and could give us useful reference points.”

Sloane took the journal and began reading. Her eyes suddenly paused on a data set, and her brows furrowed.

“Mr. Jordan, something seems off with these numbers,” she said, pointing at the chart.

Mr. Jordan raised an eyebrow and quickly came over to look. “You sure? That’s the most authoritative journal in the field.”
