Jill had heard that the Rivers family had gone looking for Sloane again, so she rushed over, just in time to run into Sloane on her way back.
“Sloane, they didn’t give you a hard time, did they?” Jill asked, breathless from running.
Sloane’s heart softened at the sight of Jill’s anxious face. She shook her head. “I’m fine. Adrian tried to force me to beg Lucas to help the Rivers family. I refused and chased him off.”
“Good for you!” Jill clenched her fist in excitement.
She frowned, her voice thick with contempt. “They’ve got the nerve to come crawling back to you? After everything they did to you, now they suddenly remember you exist? Unbelievable.”
Sloane smiled, her tone calm. “It doesn’t matter anymore. I made it clear to them -the Rivers family’s troubles have nothing to do with me.”
Jill patted her on the shoulder. “You did the right thing. Don’t bother with them. Those people from the Rivers family were never worth your time or loyalty.”
Sloane wrapped an arm around her shoulders. “I’m hungry. Let’s
go eat.”
At the mention of food, Jill’s eyes lit up. She grinned excitedly. “Sure! Cheng Yu just told me there’s a new restaurant near campus. He says it’s pretty good.”
The two of them walked off side by side; the setting sun stretched their shadows long behind them.
Meanwhile, Adrian returned to the Rivers Residence empty–handed.
As soon as Marshall saw him, he rushed over. “Adrian, how did it go?”
Adrian shook his head. “She refused to help. She even said she’s cutting ties with the Rivers family. From now on, whatever happens to us has nothing to do with
her.”

Marshall exploded with rage. “That ungrateful brat! What a heartless wretch!”
Helen sat on the couch, her face clouded and her voice thick with resentment. “If I’d known she’d turn out to be this cold–blooded, I never would’ve brought her back from the asylum. Should’ve let her rot in there! Now that the Rivers family’s in trouble, she just stands by and watches? Absolutely heartless!”
Conrad chimed in, furious. “I told you, Sloane’s nothing but an ungrateful snake!”
Adrian wasn’t happy with Sloane’s attitude either. Yes, the Rivers family had wronged her before, but this was still her home. She couldn’t just stand aside and watch them fall apart.
But she flat–out refused to plead with Lucas, and there was nothing they could do about it. They couldn’t even get a meeting with Lucas themselves.
“Dad, what are you planning to do next?”
Marshall’s face was ashen; his hands clenched into fists. His voice came out hoarse and weary. “The company, we can’t save it. Bankruptcy and liquidation are inevitable. We can’t pay off the debts. I’m planning to sell the villa.”
Helen went pale at his words. Her voice trembled. “What? You want to sell the villa? Then where are we supposed to live? Are we just going to end up on the street?”
