Chapter 300 The Power Play
Chapter 300 The Power Play
Lucas’s jaw tensed, the sharp lines of his face drawn tight, eyes flashing like blades. “Larry, you-”
“Enough.”
Sloane’s voice was soft but firm. Her slender fingers came to rest gently on Lucas’s arm. The calming touch inade him fall silent at once.
She turned to Larry, her tone calm but resolute. “Mr. Whitney, I’ll evaluate the proposal myself before giving you an answer.”
“Of course. I’ll wait to hear from you,” Larry replied, his earlier sharpness gone. A polite, easy smile replaced it when speaking to Sloane.
Lucas watched it all in silence, the sight of Larry’s demeanor making him more irritable by the second.
Ginnie, observing two of Stonebridge’s most powerful men-vying for Sloane’s attention, felt her jealousy boil over. She could barely restrain herself from lashing out.
Refusing to lose, she pulled out her trump card.
Adjusting the collar of her Chanel suit, she spoke with smug confidence, “This year’s keynote government guest is Mr. Miles. I had dinner with him last month-great conversation. Lucas, I could introduce you two when we go inside.”
Mr. Miles was a major figure at the National Development and Reform Commission, in charge of strategic emerging industries and controlling the approval of multibillion-dollar support funds.
In the pharmaceutical sector especially, he spearheaded the 14th Five-Year Plan’s Medical Innovation Initiative, which would shape the country’s pharmaceutical industry for the next five years. The first wave of funding alone was said to exceed 20 billion yuan. Every major pharma company was doing whatever it could to secure access to him.
Lucas and Larry were here today precisely to try to make contact with that very man.
Lucas frowned, his gaze filled with clear impatience. “No need.”
At his words, something flickered in Sloane’s eyes-but she quickly composed herself again.
Larry, however, looked intrigued. “Ms. Ginnie, your network is certainly impressive.”
Ginnie lifted her chin, reveling in the moment. “Naturally.”
“Mr. Miles is currently selecting a lead unit for the pharmaceutical modernization project, she continued, her voice dripping with pride. “Our Lyte family doesn’t work in pharmaceuticals, but I was fortunate enough to dine with him. Her eyes slid over to Sloane. “National-level projects like this don’t get won with a few nice dresses”
Lucas’s brows drew tighter. He was well aware of the project’s significance-Hawthorne Corp’s pharmaceutical division had been preparing for over a year, but hadn’t managed to break through to Mr.
Miles.
