Sloane’s body went rigid; the madness in her eyes slowly faded, and at last she went limp in his arms. Lucas carried the unconscious Sloane in a firm bridal hold. When he stepped out, he saw Larry being lifted onto a stretcher by paramedics.
Larry was barely conscious, yet he forced his eyes open for a final glance at Sloane. Only after confirming she was safe did he surrender to the darkness.
“Clean it up,” Lucas ordered Andrew coldly, his gaze slicing past him to the ashen-faced Ginnie at the door. “Don’t let a single one of them go.”
Without another word, he strode away with Sloane in his arms; blood from both their wounds dripped steadily, leaving a dark red trail across the hallway carpet.
Lucas sat at her bedside, his long, defined fingers gently encircling Sloane’s delicate wrist as she lay hooked to an IV.
Moonlight slipped through the curtains in fractured slivers, casting shifting shadows across her pale face.
In the middle of the night, Sloane-who had been lying quietly-suddenly began thrashing in distress.
Lucas immediately gripped her IV arm, terrified she might hurt herself.
“Don’t… don’t lock me in…” Sloane fought against her dream, the IV line jerking violently. “Let me out… please…” Her voice cracked with broken sobs; beads of cold sweat gathered on her brow. It was as if she had been dragged back into that sunless, hellish asylum.
Lucas knew she was trapped in a nightmare again. He bent quickly and gathered her into his arms, his other hand stroking her trembling back. “It’s all right; I’m here.” His voice was low, tender, yet carried a steady strength that calmed.
His words settled into her ears, and little by little, Sloane quieted.
Half-awake, half-dreaming, she blinked her eyes open. In the haze she made out the sharp line of Lucas’ jaw.
She reached instinctively for the front of his shirt, tears soaking through the fabric. “Don’t leave me… please…”
“I’m not going anywhere.” Lucas’ heart ached as he tightened his hold, drawing her closer. His lips brushed her hair in a light kiss. “I will never abandon you.”

Sloane seemed to understand; the tension in her body slowly cased, though her fists clung stubbornly to the fabric of his shirt. Lucas leaned back against the headboard, letting her rest against his chest, with one hand, he cradled her IV arm with infinite care.
By dawn, when the nurse opened the door for rounds, the sight that met her eyes was striking -the famously cold president of the Hawthorne Group, disheveled, blood still staining his shirt, holding the girl in his arms as though she were the most precious treasure in the world.
“Out.” Lucas didn’t lift his head, his voice low and flat; his gaze never left the faint flutter of Sloane’s lashes. The nurse quickly retreated, closing the door softly behind her.
