Sloane sat down by the bed and offered a solemn thank-you. “Thank you. If it weren’t for you…”
“Stop.” Larry lifted a hand to cut her off, his eyes carrying an unusual softness. “If we’re keeping score, I owe you far more.”
“If you hadn’t saved me, I’d already be dead.” Leaning back against the headboard, Larry glanced at Sloane in her hospital gown too; his smile was easy, light. “I just wanted to repay you. You don’t need to feel any weight over it.”
Sloane parted her lips, but he interrupted again. “If you really feel guilty-” He pointed at the apple on the nightstand. “Peel one for me?”
So Sloane picked up the knife and began peeling. Sunlight slipped through the cracks of the curtains, flickering over her slender fingers.
While she kept her head lowered, focused on the apple, Larry let himself watch her greedily; his gaze traced the fine lines of her profile. Light shimmered across her long lashes, leaving delicate shadows on her cheeks. She looked utterly absorbed-brows faintly knit, lips pressed together.
“All done.” Sloane handed him the apple, its peel a single unbroken ribbon, flawless like a work of art.
As Larry took it, his fingertips brushed across the back of her hand. That fleeting warmth sent a tremor through him. He bit into the apple; sweet, crisp juice burst across his tongue. “So sweet.”
He took another large bite, but his eyes never left her face. “Sweetest apple I’ve ever tasted.”
Outside, the plane trees rustled; a single leaf spiraled down onto the windowsill. I’ll remember this moment… for a long, long time.
When Sloane stepped out of the room, Lucas’ lowered head immediately lifted.
He trailed close behind her, his long fingers absently rubbing at his cuff. Several times he looked as if he wanted to speak, his gaze shifting between her profile and the hallway ahead.
“So…” At last, he couldn’t hold it back; his voice was lower than usual. “You and Larry…”
Sloane kept walking, though the corners of her lips tugged upward. “Hm?”

Chapter 312 Peel Me An Apple
Lucas’ Adam’s apple bobbed; he searched for the right words. “Is he… feeling any better?”
“Much better.” Sloane deliberately sidestepped the meaning in his tone. “Didn’t you go see him yourself yesterday?”
Lucas pressed his lips together, fell silent again, and followed a few more steps. Sunlight poured through the corridor windows, stretching their shadows long across the floor.
“Sloane…” His gaze lingered on her face, his voice tinged with unease. “Are you
still angry?”
She turned to look at him. Under the sun, his eyes shone like amber, filled with careful, nervous anticipation.
She tilted her head. “Depends on how you behave.”
Lucas’ brows tightened; he began pacing back and forth, his polished shoes tapping urgently against the marble floor. Suddenly, he stopped and turned to Andrew. “Tell me-what should I do to make her forgive me?”
