Andrew thought quickly. “What if… you made something yourself? Ms. Rivers loves the cakes from that pastry shop on the west side, doesn’t she?”
Lucas’ eyes lit up, then furrowed again. “But I don’t know how to make desserts.”
“You could learn, Mr. Hawthorne!” Andrew brightened immediately, encouraged that his suggestion wasn’t dismissed. “I’ll invite a pastry chef to teach you.”
Lucas considered for a moment, then suddenly strode toward the elevator. “No need. Buy the pastry shop; have the chef teach me personally.”
“Now?” Andrew jogged after him.
“Right now.” Lucas pressed the elevator button, glancing back in the direction of Sloane’s room; determination flashed in his eyes. “Before she’s discharged, I’ll master it.”
Andrew wiped at the sweat on his forehead. The powerful businessman, reduced to this just to win over the woman he loved… truly beyond reason.
Lucas stood at the counter of the pastry shop, his usually decisive hands fumbling awkwardly with a piping bag. His suit jacket was dusted with flour, the strands of hair at his forehead damp with sweat; still, his focus never wavered.
“Mr. Hawthorne, the cream needs to be stirred clockwise…” the chef reminded gently.
“All right.” Lucas nodded, eyes fixed with the same intensity he used to review the most important contracts. His long fingers carefully rotated the bowl; his movements carried a near-reverent precision.
On the third attempt, the cream was still too thin to hold. Lucas let out a quiet sigh, then straightened his back. “Prepare another set of ingredients.”
The chef stared in surprise. He had expected this powerful man to lose patience quickly. Yet Lucas was already fastening his apron again, his gaze unwavering. “Teach me once more.”
And so, from sunset to deep into the night, the president of Hawthorne Group practiced tirelessly in the pastry shop. Every time he failed, he simply wiped the sweat from his brow and tried again. By three in the morning, when the staff were yawning, Lucas still stood at the counter, adjusting the pressure of his fingers with meticulous care.
“Mr. Hawthorne, perhaps tomorrow would be-“The chef hesitated.

“Once more.” Lucas’ voice was hoarse, but his eyes remained sharp. His fingertips trembled from overuse, yet he gripped the piping bag steadily.
When the first rays of dawn streamed through the glass window, Lucas finally completed a cake-not perfect, but brimming with sincerity.
He studied it, then at last allowed a faint smile. “Pack it up. Thank you.”
