Samson shot him a glance. “Go ahead and keep pretending. Once I find out the truth, I won’t tell you a thing.”

With that, he quietly followed after Lucas.

But before Samson could uncover anything, Sloane’s phone rang-it was Conor.

“Got it, I’ll head over right away.” Sloane hung up, her expression turning grave.

Lucas immediately stood. “I’ll take you.”

The situation was urgent; they set out at once. Conor had already given her a rough idea over the phone-this time, things were tricky, and Sloane would need to stay with the unit for a while.

At the base entrance, Lucas handed her luggage to the officer who had come to meet her, his face clouded with concern. “You’re still not fully recovered. Don’t forget to rest when you’re busy; take care of yourself…”

Sloane looked at the suddenly long-winded Lucas and couldn’t help but laugh. “Lucas, sometimes you make me feel like you’re raising me as your daughter.”

Her words left him completely speechless.

Sloane burst out laughing, gave him a quick wave, and turned to head inside.

Lucas took half a step forward, then stopped. His throat worked, but in the end, he said nothing.

Her figure vanished past the base gates; Lucas turned to leave.

Suddenly, rapid footsteps pounded behind him. Before he could turn, a familiar figure rushed in front of him.

“Sloane? You-”

Before he could finish, Sloane rose on tiptoe, pressing her soft lips lightly to the corner of his mouth.

The moment she pulled away, she spun around and darted back into the base.

Lucas jolted, wanting to chase after her, but the soldiers at the gate barred his

way.

Two armed guards stepped in front of him, faces expressionless. “Sorry. Military grounds-no unauthorized entry.”

Lucas could only stand there helplessly, watching her figure grow smaller in the distance.

He stood frozen, his fingertips brushing unconsciously against his mouth, where the soft warmth of her lips seemed to linger. His brows furrowed slightly, as if questioning whether that flecting moment had been real-had she really kissed him, or had he imagined it?
