“When I was little, I used to drink tea with my grandfather all the time; I picked up a bit of knowledge that way.” Lucas said, his eyes fixed intently on her lips as they moved against the rim of the cup. “And besides, I know a lot more than that.”
Sloane’s fingers tightened around the teacup; her heart gave a nervous flutter.
Brian squinted at the two of them exchanging words, then abruptly cleared his throat. “So, Lucas, how’s this green tea?”
Only then did Lucas pull his gaze back. He took a light sip and said, “The tea is a bright, reddish-orange; the aged aroma is strong and rich. At the very least, it’s been stored for over ten years.”
He tilted the cup slightly, letting the amber liquid cling to the glass before turning to Sloane. “What do you think, Sloane?”
Meeting the depth of his dark eyes made her pulse stumble. Almost instinctively, she picked up the thread of conversation. “The storage was clean-no off-notes. But…” She leaned in slightly, inhaling the faint aroma. “Starting with the third brew, there’s a trace of storage mustiness. That means the humidity control during mid-term storage wasn’t precise enough.”
The entire room froze in shock.
Brian burst out laughing. “Well, well! Didn’t expect Dr. Rivers to be such a connoisseur.”
Sloane cast Lucas a sidelong glance, smiling as she replied, “When I was young, I often accompanied my mentor in the mountains; I just picked up a few surface-level things.”
At her words, Lucas’ eyes flickered. His fingers brushed against the rim of his cup, and the corner of his lips lifted in a quiet, knowing smile.
When he raised his gaze again, it lingered on her like silk, carrying a possessiveness that was impossible to miss. That half-smile of his carried a teasing, intimate charge, like invisible fingers brushing over the strings of her heart. Her breath caught; her heartbeat stuttered and then raced wildly out of control.
“Oh, I don’t understand any of this,” Jill suddenly cut in, springing to her feet. She tugged Sloane up with her. “Sloane, we just got a new perfume; the scent is perfect for you. Come on, I’ll let you try it.”
Without waiting, she whisked Sloane upstairs.
As Sloane glanced back, she locked eyes with Lucas’ amused gaze. His thin lips pressed together, then slowly relaxed into a perfectly measured curve-as if sharing a secret only the two of them knew. The unspoken intimacy lingered in the air, setting her cheeks aflame.
Jill pushed Sloane down into a chair and loomed over her. “Alright, Sloane-spill it. What’s really going on between you and Mr. Hawthorne”
Compared to facing Lucas, Sloane was much calmer in front of Jill. Thinking of how quickly someone had rushed over today, she couldn’t help but smile. “Exactly what you think.”
“What?” Jill squealed, then clapped a hand over her mouth. Her eyes sparkled as she pressed on. “You mean… you two are together?”

Sloane shook her head. “Not yet.”

That answer drove Jill half mad. She squeezed in beside Sloane. “You’re killing me here-then what stage are you at?”
Sloane leaned close and whispered a few words in her ear.
“What?” Jill shrieked, quickly covering her mouth again. She was practically shaking with excitement. “You kissed Mr. Hawthorne? When did this happen? Where? How did he react?”
