Sloane arched a brow. “Oh?”

“You don’t know,” Jill whispered conspiratorially, leaning close. “My Uncle Samson says that whatever Mr. Hawthorne has ever wanted, he’s always gotten without effort. And men-when something comes too easily, they never cherish it.”
That day, Sloane had acted on pure impulse; she hadn’t even figured out what to do next. That was why she had bolted straight from the lab and hidden here with Jill.
What she hadn’t expected was for Lucas to come chasing after her immediately.
Downstairs, Lucas appeared focused on his chess match with Brian, yet his gaze kept flicking toward the staircase. When Sloane finally reappeared at the landing, the black piece in his hand snapped onto the board with precision-right into a lethal position.
“Checkmate.” Brian roared with laughter. “Lucas, you’re distracted-what’s on your mind?”
Lucas said nothing; his eyes burned as they locked onto Sloane.
She met his gaze head-on-and even shot him a glare.
At the dinner table, Lucas naturally claimed the seat right beside her.
The housekeeper set down a spread of comforting dishes. “This crab cake, the barbecue ribs, and the roasted salmon-Mr. Hawthorne specifically requested these. He said they’re Ms. Rivers’ favorites.”
Every head swiveled toward Lucas and Sloane, eyes gleaming with knowing amusement.
Brian, catching the scene, stroked his beard and let out a hearty laugh. “Alright, alright, enough standing around-let’s eat!” He gave the butler a meaningful glance. “Bring out my prized bottle of bourbon; tonight, we celebrate!”
Lucas remained unruffled under everyone’s teasing. With practiced elegance, he slipped on a pair of disposable gloves and began cracking open crab legs; each piece of tender meat he laid carefully onto Sloane’s plate.
“I can do it myself,” she muttered under her breath.
“Your hand is still injured.” Without looking up, Lucas continued peeling the crabs. “That burn from the lab hasn’t healed yet.”
Sloane hadn’t expected him to even know about that.
Jill’s aunt and Brian exchanged a look of quiet understanding, but neither of them let on.
After dinner, everyone gathered for conversation. Jill held Sloane’s hand, “Grandpa, I want to invite Sloane to stay with us a few days; she can also help take care of your health”
Brian glanced toward Lucas, stroking his beard, ready to agree-but Lucas cut in smoothly. “Mr. Brian, may I borrow your study? There’s something I need to discuss with Sloane-privately.”
