From the side, Jill made exaggerated winks. “Don’t worry, Mr. Hawthorne; I’ll make sure Sloane is well taken care of.”
Lucas inclined his head, then turned and left the Besnard residence.
When he had gone to the base to pick Sloane up only to find her missing, and learned she had hidden herself at the Besnards’, he hadn’t even stopped to think-he had rushed straight there. His intention had been to drag her back, to demand an answer about that kiss.
He had wanted her to give him something certain, something undeniable.
But the moment he saw her inside the Besnards’ home, everything changed.
He couldn’t bear to make things difficult for her; so he chose to give her time, to wait willingly.
He was in a hurry, yes-but he knew this wasn’t a moment for impatience.
Sloane reached out to Lena, asking about Dr. Bonnie; the information she received matched almost exactly with what Lucas had uncovered.
“Miss,” Lena said, “Our people have already left the valley and settled in. Should I contact them, have them investigate?”
They were men her mentor had handpicked. When Sloane had returned injured, her mentor had heard from her about her true parentage; he had arranged for these men to leave the valley and help her.
“Yes.” Sloane spoke carefully. “Tell them to be cautious; they mustn’t alert the enemy.”
“Yes, Miss,” Lena answered.
Sloane stood by the window, tilting her face toward the moonlight; her fingers absently traced the frame. The night wind was cool, yet it did nothing to scatter the unease churning in her chest.
She had grown up under her adoptive parents’ constant disdain; later, she had endured the cold indifference and calculated use of the Rivers family. Those memories-of being rejected, treated like a burden-were barbed thorns lodged deep in her heart. Now that she knew she had biological parents she had never met, she couldn’t stop the fear from creeping in. Would they look forward to meeting this daughter they’d never seen? Or, like everyone else, would they be disappointed… disgusted?
“Sloane?” Jill entered with a steaming cup of milk in hand. “Why are you standing in the draft?”
Pulled from her thoughts, Sloane accepted the cup. The warmth against her chilled fingers brought a faint comfort. “Thank you.”
Sensing her mood, Jill tilted her lead. “Mr. Hawthorne told you about Dr. Bonnie, didn’t he?”
Sloane nodded lightly, her fingertip tracing the rim of the cup. “He told me everything.”
Jill wrinkled her nose in displeasure. “That so-called Dr. Bonnie-just a hollow name, all show and no substance. Don’t worry; we’re all behind you.”

Her words settled warmly in Sloane’s heart. She couldn’t help but reach out and pinch Jill’s cheek. “Alright… thank you.”
