Sloane felt her whole body go weak, her legs barely able to hold her up. Just as she was about to lose her balance, Lucas suddenly straightened and stepped back, putting space between them.
The abrupt retreat left her momentarily dazed; her cheeks were still flushed, and she let out several uneven breaths without realizing it.
Lucas turned, pulled a stack of documents from his bag, and handed them to her. “Take a look at this.”
Sloane blinked, needing a moment before she accepted the papers. She flipped them open, scanning the contents; her brows drew tighter and tighter. “Consuela Pharmaceutical… Dr. Bonnie?” Her eyes darted across the pages. “They’re copying my treatment protocols?”
“Not just that.” Lucas stepped closer, his voice low and grave. “Next month, at the medical summit, they plan for Dr. Bonnie to ‘cure’ a terminal patient onstage-then announce the launch of this so-called anti- cancer drug.”
Sloane’s eyes narrowed. “Did you find out who’s really pulling the strings?”
Lucas shook his head, his expression dark. “Not yet. They’ve buried themselves deep; every lead cuts off before it reaches the core.”
At that, a cold smile curved Sloane’s lips, a flash of steel sparking in her eyes. “If they’re targeting me, they can’t stay hidden forever; sooner or later, they’ll slip.”
The thought triggered something sharp in her mind. Her heart lurched violently. The one who tore me from my parents for so many years… could it be them?
A surge of tangled emotions welled up, stealing her breath..
For three years she had laid the groundwork, all to flush that person out. And now, at last, she was seeing the faint outline. Excitement trembled through her as she clutched the file, her fingertips whitening from the pressure.
Seeing her agitation rise, Lucas moved in, his hands resting gently on her shoulders, his voice soothing. “Don’t rush. Whoever’s behind this, I’ll help you uncover the truth. Step by step, we’ll get there.”
Clearly, he had reached the same conclusion.
Sloane lifted her gaze, her eyes swirling with emotion-anger, defiance, but above all, resolve. “Lucas, I have to drag them into the light. For all the suffering my parents and I endured, I’ll make them pay.”
Her eyes blazed with a fire of vengeance, as if she might break through every barrier and tear her enemies apart on the spot.
Lucas studied the redness gathering in her eyes and said softly, “Alright. I’ll help you.”
Just three simple words-but they made her nose sting with sudden heat.
When Sloane and Lucas emerged from the study, Jill noticed Sloane’s reddened eyes and immediately assumed the worst. She hurried over, looping her arm through Sloane’s, glaring at Lucas with suspicion. “Sloane, what happened? Did he upset you?”
