Lucas had no choice but to call Sloane with a teasing tone. “Sloane, something came up on my end, I’ll be a little late picking you up at the Besnard family’s.”

“Alright,” Sloane replied.

When Lucas stepped into the top floor office of Peak Corp, only a secretary was waiting by the door.

“Mr. Hawthorne, our president is inside,” the secretary said, opening the door but making no move to enter herself. Clearly, Lucas was expected to go in alone.

The glass door closed soundlessly behind him.

At the center of the office, a black ebony chair faced away from the door. Its high back loomed like a throne, completely concealing the figure seated there-only a slender wrist rested casually on the armrest.

“Mr. Hawthorne, I’ve been waiting for you a long time.” The-familiar cool voice drifted across the room. The chair slowly swiveled, revealing Sloane’s smiling eyes. For once, she wore a white suit, her long hair swept up, fingers idly toying with the model of the sixth-generation robot on the desk.

The folder in Lucas’ hand slipped to the floor with a sharp slap. For three years, the elusive president who had never shown their face was now looking at him with eyes he knew better than his own.

“So you’re confident about the free clinic in three days?” Lucas recovered quickly, his lips curving into a wry, indulgent smile. “And you still found time to play tricks on me.”

Sloane gave a soft laugh. The hem of her suit jacket traced a graceful line as she rose. Walking up to him, she reached out to smooth a tie that had no wrinkles at all. “How is it a trick, when you were the one insisting on meeting me again and again?” Her fingertips brushed lightly across his throat, grazing his Adam’s apple. “What’s wrong; disappointed?”

Lucas caught her restless hand, his thumb stroking the thin callus at the base of her palm-the mark of countless years spent with needles. “So these past three years, every video conference…”

“A voice changer, nothing more.” Sloane slipped her hand free; as she turned, a strand of hair brushed against his jaw, carrying with it the faint scent of herbs.

In that instant, Lucas suddenly caught her wrist, spun her around in one swift motion, and pulled her back.

Caught off guard, Sloane fell into his arms, her back colliding with the firm wall of his chest.

“And what exactly is Mr. Hawthorne trying to do?” Sloane tilted her head up at him. Her tone remained composed, but the flush creeping up her ears betrayed her.

Lucas lowered his gaze, eyes lingering on her parted lips. “Collecting a debt.”

“What debt…”

Her words dissolved into his sudden kiss. One hand cupped the back of her head, the other locked firmly around her waist, pouring three years of restraint into the press of his lips.
