Lucas dipped his head and brushed her lips with a light kiss. “Nothing. I’ve already arranged people to keep watch at the children’s hospital; all you need to do is focus on treating the kids.”
Sloane leaned against his arm, tilting her head to look at him, a mischievous glint flickering in her eyes. “Mr. Hawthorne, are you trying to be my knight in shining armor?”
Lucas’ long fingers grazed the loose strands by her ear, his voice low and steady. “No. I’ll be your shadow.” The warmth of his touch lingered through her hair. “From now on, wherever you go, I’ll be right there.”
Sloane let out a soft laugh, poking his solid chest with her fingertip. “The great Mr. Hawthorne reduced to my tagalong?”
“Why not?” Lucas suddenly caught her hand and laced his fingers through hers, pressing them firmly to his chest.
“Knock, knock!”
The sound at the door made Sloane slip naturally from his embrace. “Come in.”
The secretary entered, her eyes instantly catching the faint smudge of lipstick on Sloane’s mouth, then the same trace staining Lucas’ lips. She quickly lowered her gaze. “Ms. Rivers, the testing report for the sixth- generation bionic robot is ready.”
Sloane calmly took the file, her fingers discreetly brushing the corner of her lips from an angle Lucas couldn’t see. “Thank you. You can go.”.
The moment the door closed, Lucas wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. “Ms. Rivers, your lipstick doesn’t seem to hold up.” He chuckled, pointing to the faint smear of red on his reflection in the report’s glossy cover. See-it’s all over me.”
Heat rushed to Sloane’s ears. She nudged him back with her elbow. “Mr. Hawthorne, maybe wipe your mouth first.” She forced a serious face. “If you walk out like that, it’ll ruin your icy reputation.”
But Lucas caught her wrist, turning her to face him. “No need.” His thumb brushed the corner of her mouth. “Better to let everyone see…” He bent down and stole another quick kiss. “…that you’re mine.”
“Enough,” Sloane said, tugging at his wrist. “Come on; I want to show you something.”
She led him through a side door in the office and into a concealed elevator.
As the lift descended, she pressed her fingertip against the scanner, unlocking it. With a conspiratorial wink, she said, “Welcome to the core lab of Peak Corp.”
Sloane guided Lucas to the glass viewing wall of the laboratory, then tapped a remote control. With a mechanical hiss, the chamber doors slid open, and a row of figures in white lab coats marched out in perfect formation.
“Sixth-generation bionic models, medical specialization.” Sloane’s fingertip glided across a holographic screen, pulling up detailed specifications. “The joints are embedded with force-feedback systems, precise enough to replicate my acupuncture techniques.” She queued a demo video; on the screen, a bionic figure treated a patient with the exact same style that defined Sloane’s own hand.
