After Helen left, Adrian spoke in a low voice. “Samantha, don’t blame Mom; she’s just really scared…”

Samantha gave him a sweet smile. “I understand, Adrian.” She gently held his hand. “What matters is that our family is together again.”

But once Adrian, too, had gone, her smile vanished in an instant. She walked to the window, gazing toward the distant Hawthorne residence, her nails digging deep into her palms.

“Pathetic,” she scoffed. “A bunch of useless cowards. You’re afraid of her; I’m not.”

“Sloane…” she whispered softly, “you think the Hawthornes can keep you safe?” From inside her coat, she pulled out a small vial filled with an eerie blue powder. “I’ll show you what it means to live a life worse than death…”

The rain poured harder, drowning out her venomous murmur.

At the Hawthorne residence, Sloane stood beneath the eaves, watching the rain.

“You’re not fully recovered; why are you standing out in the wind?”

A deep male voice came from behind her. Moments later, warm arms wrapped around her waist. Lucas rested his chin lightly on her shoulder; his breath fanned against her ear.

Sloane relaxed into his embrace, a faint smile tugging at her lips. “I’m not that fragile. Didn’t you say you had a meeting tonight?”

“Canceled.” Lucas’ reply was short. His fingers slowly combed through her hair where it spilled across her shoulders.

“Dr. Bonnie went into the Rivers residence today.”

Sloane turned, tilting her face up to meet Lucas’ dark, steady gaze, showing little surprise. “When?”

“Seven seventeen this evening.” His answer was precise; his brow furrowed. “She went in through the back entrance… and never came out.”

Lucas studied the calm look in Sloane’s eyes and raised a brow.

“You already knew Dr. Bonnie was Samantha, didn’t you?” His voice was low, restrained.

The sound of raindrops pelting against the tall windows suddenly sharpened, like countless tiny fingers tapping on the glass.

“At first, it was only a suspicion,” Sloane said quietly, her fingers brushing over his tie, smoothing out a crease that wasn’t there. “But now that you’ve told me she entered the Rivers residence, I’m certain.”

Lucas caught her restless hand, his frown deepening. “When did you start to suspect her?”

“The first time we met.” A cold smile curved her lips. “That look of hatred in her eyes…. it hasn’t changed.”

Pulling her hand free, she walked to the liquor cabinet and poured herself half a glass of red wine. The
