Sloane didn’t answer her right away. Instead, she pulled her to sit down. “I know you’re anxious, but don’t

be.”

“How can I not be?” Jill stomped her foot in frustration. “Those patients are clearly in trouble! What if something suddenly happens during treatment…”

Sloane, calm as ever, explained, “With public opinion boiling over like this, I can’t avoid it even if I try.”

Jill ground her teeth. “And those families-seriously. The one who harmed their loved ones is Dr. Bonnie. If they’ve got the guts, they should go after her. But no, when something goes wrong, they come here to guilt-trip someone else. Cowards, the lot of them.”

Sloane didn’t tell Jill the other reason she had agreed to help. Conor had come to her, asking that while she treated those seventeen patients, she also help the police track down the overseas medical black market chain.

Lucas took the fruit plate from Molly’s hands and walked slowly over to sit beside Sloane. “She knows what she’s doing. You don’t need to make a scene.”

Jill finally began to calm down. “I’m just scared for you. These past few years it’s always been one thing after another. You’ve never had any peace…”

Sloane soothed her, then looked up at Lucas. Seeing his expression unchanged, not taking Jill’s words to heart, she let out a quiet sigh of relief.

Lucas noticed and raised an eyebrow, as if to say, Do you really think I’m so petty I’d bother arguing with a child?

Sloane smiled again and winked at him.

Now calmer, Jill also realized she had spoken out of turn. The thought of Mr. Hawthorne’s cold face made

her uneasy,

Knowing his presence kept them from relaxing, Lucas said, “I’ve got a video meeting soon. You two talk.”

Then he stood, stepped close to Sloane, and bent down to press a soft kiss against her smooth forehead.

The gesture was so natural it seemed like he’d done it countless times before, yet it carried an undeniable possessiveness.

Jill’s eyes went wide. The teacup in her hand clattered onto the table, spilling tea everywhere. Her mouth
