Sloane helplessly pressed down on her hand. “Stop shaking me. If you keep it up, I’m going to get dizzy.”
Jill lowered her voice, eyes sparkling. “So… Mr. Hawthorne is actually this gentle in private? I thought even when it came to romance he’d treat it like business.”
Sloane laughed at her, but her mind betrayed her, conjuring the image of Lucas pinning her against the study door the night before, kissing her deeply-nothing about that had been businesslike.
Jill suddenly let out a sigh. “You two are finally together. Now I can relax.”
Looking at her acting so old-fashioned for her age, Sloane couldn’t resist pinching her cheek. “You little brat, what are you pretending to be so serious for?”
Rubbing her reddened face, Jill said with rare earnestness, “I mean it. I’ve watched you shoulder everything alone all these years. Now that Mr. Hawthorne’s protecting you, I can finally be at ease.” She paused, then blinked mischievously. “Even if he’s cold as ice to others, he’s awfully gentle with you, isn’t he?”
Sloane was about to deny it when her phone buzzed. It was a message from Lucas: “Samson’s hosting dinner tonight. Stay with Jill a while longer-we’ll leave at seven.”
She had just finished reading when another buzz came: “Wear the pearl-white dress I gave you.”
Jill peeked at the screen and couldn’t help clicking her tongue. “Mr. Hawthorne even dictates what you wear? That’s too domineering…”
At exactly seven, Lucas’s black Maybach waited at the door. He stood beside it in a perfectly tailored black suit that made his tall frame even more striking. When he saw Sloane walk toward him in the dress he’d chosen, his gaze darkened noticeably.
“Beautiful,” he said, reaching out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear. His fingers brushed her earlobe ever so lightly, making her shiver.
Jill, standing nearby, gaped so wide her bag nearly slipped from her hand. Lucas’s glance swept over her and she instantly straightened her back. “I-I didn’t see a thing!”
Satisfied, Lucas opened the car door for Sloane himself.
Once they were both seated, he turned to the girl still frozen outside. “Aren’t you getting in?”
“Oh, right!” Jill scrambled into the back seat.
Lucas’s hand brushed against Sloane’s. “Your hand’s a little cold.” With a tap on the console, the car’s temperature rose by two degrees.
Jill clapped a hand over her mouth to keep from making a sound. Is this really the same Lucas who strikes fear in the business world?
When they reached the restaurant, Lucas stepped out first, then circled around to open Sloane’s door. One hand shielded her from hitting her head while the other slipped naturally around her waist, steady and familiar, as if he’d done it countless times before.
