The head nurse, a woman in her fifties, removed her glasses and wiped them on her sleeve. “Dr. Rivers, my granddaughter just started kindergarten.” Her voice was soft but unsteady. But thirty years ago, when I took my oath, I swore to heal the sick and protect every life entrusted to me.” Her hands shook as she put her glasses back on, her eyes bloodshot behind the lenses. “I may be old, but I’ll fight this with everything I have.”

“My fiancée’s birthday is next week.” Maxwell suddenly grabbed the treatment plan from the table. “If she ever thought I was a coward who ran away…” He gave a crooked smile that looked more like he was on the verge of tears. “I’d never get the chance to propose.”

In the corner, Liana, a newly graduated nurse, was still crying. Even so, she raised her hand, shaking. “My parents… they survived because doctors and nurses risked everything during an outbreak years ago…”

Sloane’s vision blurred. She looked at these familiar faces-some still wiping away tears, some with knees trembling uncontrollably-but one by one, they stood.

“Good.” She drew in a deep breath, her voice unsteady but firm. “Then we fight this together, all the way to the end.” She turned to the whiteboard and wrote in bold letters: Battle Plan.

“Step one was seventy-two hours of nonstop monitoring, step two was collecting viral samples every two hours, and step three…”

The pen snapped. Ink spread across her hand. Sloane looked down at the mess and let out a sudden laugh. “Even the pen knows we’re in for a tough fight. My preliminary plan is to use plasma exchange to remove circulating toxins, then follow with targeted antivirals to stop the virus from replicating…” She paused. “And this assignment-”

“I’ll take it.” The head of anesthesiology spoke up. Only minutes ago he had begged to transfer out, but now he was tucking his family photo back into his pocket. “My daughter… she’ll be proud of her father.”

Sloane nodded. “All right. Then it’s yours.”

At last, she turned toward the darkening sky outside the window. “Now, I want each of you to write a letter -a message to your families, in case any of us don’t make it through this. Treatment begins in two hours.”

For a moment, no one moved. Then the head nurse suddenly chuckled. “What should I even write? My husband already knows my bank password.”

Laughter rippled through the tension. A young nurse from the lab quickly slipped her phone to a colleague, “If something happens to me… Help me clear out my shopping cart.”

That night, at the Rivers family estate….

Samantha stood at the window, her nails biting into her palm. Seven days had passed, and not a single patient had worsened. Every report was the same: no collapse, no deaths, no bad news at all. With a sudden turn, she swept the bottles and jars off the dressing table, smashing them across the floor,

“Damn it… That fool lied to me…” she hissed through clenched teeth, the scar above her brow twisted and ugly in the moonlight.

Footsteps sounded outside. Adrian knocked softly, balancing a mug of hot milk. “Samantha, are you all right?”
